i don't think it's really feasible to consolidate those much further than they've already been consolidated...not and keep them affordable
a phone needs to be small...smartphones are plenty big and people generally won't tolerate larger phones
a kindle simply cannot be reasonably compared to a phone, tablet, or laptop...i don't care who says they use their ipad or iphone or laptop to read books, they're simply not the same thing...the kindle (and the like) beats the crap out of any other device's abilities as an ebook reader
a tablet is invariably weak and less useful than a laptop, depending on the task...it's still mostly a purpose-built machine (or, rather, has a much shorter list of things it's good at compared to a laptop)...not to say they're bad or everyone needs a laptop, but they fill different niches
a laptop is for those who want to do the most and are willing to sacrifice the size and weight...it's better than the other three at more things, though not as good as each in their particular niche

A tablet is a smart phone for blind people that don't need to make phone calls.
Or rather that's how I feel about tablets at least...
Kindle & Tablet both are purpose-built... there's nothing on these devices you can't do with a smart phone and/or a laptop. 5/13/2011 3:21:42 PM |

this is technically true, but it's like saying that calculators are obsolete because you can use a laptop for that, too
i congratulate anyone who doesn't notice a difference between reading full-length novels, on a regular basis, on a device using e-ink and a laptop screen and/or smartphone screen...you're in the minority
i can drive my car 50 feet to my next-door neighbor's house for a casual visit, but that doesn't mean it isn't stupid to do so5/13/2011 3:35:43 PM |

Its been posted elsewhere, but the barnes and noble Nook can be hacked very easily to run Android and/or Gingerbreak I think, giving you a $250 tablet. Not sure what all capablities it has but it can do internet and Flash along with download most Android apps. 5/14/2011 8:33:52 AM |

I've got a family member that keeps bugging me about wanting to get a tablet. Thing is, he's super cheap and wants to spend as little money as possible. I told him his two best options were to buy a used iPad off craigslist or do the whole nook hacking thing with Android, but even those two options are more than he wants to spend. He's seeing these $100 tablets and keeps asking for my advice. I don't have any personal experience with them but every review I read says to stay as far away from them as possible. Are there any sub $200 options out there that aren't complete pieces of crap?] 5/18/2011 12:51:50 PM |

I've got an Archos 70. I really enjoy it. Android 2.2 and about 7-10 hours of battery. Depending on use it lasts me 2-3 days before having to charge.
It's not quite a galaxy tab in build quality, but it's got more horsepower than the galaxy. Long story short I'm taking the plunge for a new blackberry and a playbook or switching to WebOS tab/phone once everything is launched and gets a good software update this summer. If I don't sell this tablet I'll be passing it along to my mom. She freaking loves checking facebook, reading email, and (most of all) showing photos off on it. Once you wire it into a NAS unit it's quite awesome. I've got it paired via homepipe and she can show off photos from anywhere with wifi without having to sync anything to the cloud (for privacy reasons.) 5/18/2011 1:56:56 PM |

^^ I won one in a raffle at work and have loved it so far. Battery life and performance may not be as awesome as some of the other tablets out there, but the pre-installed apps, additional ports and stylus make up for it. It comes in handy for meetings and stuff.

Doesn't mean demand will go down. In fact the Tegra3 is the most anticipated hardware upgrade to date.
Quote : | "To make matters worse, it's believed that these devices will eventually be offered free given that Amazon and Barnes & Noble mainly profit from their content platforms." |
But this is limited to the Kindle Tablet and the Nook Tablet, these are the only two tablets in that price point and that's why they can be sold that cheap. You don't have to make money on the hardware... Apple has proven that at-cost hardware to get people to purchase content is a very profitable scheme.

It could be interpreted that Android tablets are getting more competitive (and taking market share) as well since Android tablets are found very easily for $400 or less, a lot cheaper than the iPad2... Also the iPad2 came out 11 months ago, it's no wonder sales demand has gone down... either that or it's because everyone has one. When you're starting from 10%, it's easy to increase market share, and when your 90% like the iPad, it's a lot easier to lose marketshare.
