I am leaning towards a mac rather than a standard windows based laptop. Ive never really dealt with macs but it just seems a bit simpler to get one. Either would work but what would be the main benefits and problems with either one? i.e. what would you recommend?

i basically want the computer to be able to get online, do paperwork and save important files, and use for music and video/dvds while traveling.

if that's all you want to do, an equal comparison would be buy a windows laptop and light $800 in cash on fire or buy a mac
