Anybody here live(d) in Mebane or Hillsborough? With the new job in Chapel Hill I am seriously looking at both of these as places to move. Anybody got any commentary on either? Specifically schools and apartments to go to or avoid, as I have a 2nd grader and a preschooler and am looking to probably rent an apartment for a year first, and once we get a good feel for the area, then buy another house. Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I lived in Mebane my whole life until this year. Mebane is a nice place, but is growing rapidly. The new Tanger outlets just came there. But Mebane is a pretty nice place, nice apartments on the new side of town. New side of town also has the better elementary school (South Mebane). Lots of good eating places, a short drive to Burlington for a better mall. Probably a 20-30 minute drive to Chapel Hill. Any more specific questions, just let me know.

Any apartments to stay away from? I am looking mainly at the ones close to the interstate, so specifically I am going to check out Stoneybrook (already went by), Spring Forest at Deerfield, Ashbury Square (goes to Efland Cheeks though), Deerfield Crossing, Fieldstone, and Carden Place, once it opens. I know a few go to Audrey Garrett, but I have a coworker whose kid is in South Mebane and said it was really good.

Also going to spend the weekend looking at apartments and stay up there. I heard one of the Mexican restaurants is great. Do you prefer La Cocina or La Fiesta?

BTW any commentary from anybody on Patriots Pointe, Ashford Lakes, or Heritage in Hillsborough?

As far as the apartments near the interstate, I don't think you would have a problem. Audrey Garrett isn't a bad school either, just forget its there lol. Fieldstone is a pretty nice place. Its a housing and apartment community. Close to the rec center, but still close to the interstate.

I prefer La Cocina but they are both really good.

Other notable places to check out.. Blue Ribbon Diner, Martinho's downtown, A&M BBQ, Cracker Barrel of course

I think we are going to hit La Cocina Saturday night, probably try out Mebane UMC Sunday AM and grab lunch somewhere before heading home.

I had a delivery job about 10 years ago that took me to Hillsborough/Mebane daily. I know things have changed quite a bit since then though.

Hillsborough always reminded me of a nicer Roanoke Rapids. Around the highway is a big cluster of gas stations and fast food that makes it look like a dump, but the downtown area is pretty nice and there are some great views in the area.

I don't know much about Mebane other than there are some badass houses tucked in the woods around there that can't be seen from the road.

If you're Methodist. near where you'll be living is a nice church i think. Hawfields UMC. On Saturday nights they have a contemporary service that I enjoyed going to. never been to the Sunday morning service. Grab your lunch at Blue Ribbon. Get french fries. Get ranch dressing for said fries. mmmmmmmm

^^Hillsborough at least does not smell like Roanoke Rapids. Thank God!

^Hawfield's is Presbyterian.

But yea, I am going to try Mebane UNC and do the early service, which is contemporary and casual. Probably will try to hit up Blue Ribbon. Was debating that or Grill Worx. Have you also tried the new bowling place? Saw some pictures and shit and it looked pretty nice.

Hillsborough is pretty nice- it's only about a 15-mile bike ride from Durham so we go there pretty regularly on our shorter rides, stop at Weaver St. Market or Cup-A-Joe, and bike back. Good downtown area- I hope the land stays relatively cheap there so I can buy some after I get out of school .

There's a Sonic and Stake & Shake out towards Mebane/Burlington. Next nearest Sonic is in Raleigh. Something to consider in making living decisions.

^Not true. There is a Cook Out closer than Steak and Shake. In Graham there is a Cook Out.

One of my best friends lived in Mebane for a couple years and worked in Durham. There are a couple cool little bars in the downtown area. The only downside to it for him was that all of his friends lived in Greensboro, which is about a 45 minute drive.

Yea, checked out shit in Mebane today, and really liked a few of the apartments. Carden Place is awesome, but its only opened yesterday and only has one building available so far. Bonus points because it is literally across the street from Tanger, so we could just walk there. Spring Forest at Deerfield was also very nice, and is probably our number 2 option.

Hit up La Cocina tonight and enjoyed it. Still think El Bandido's is Hillsborough is better though myself. Going to Mebane Methodist tomorrow and then hitting up Blue Ribbon Diner. Already got the menu and its looks very delicious.

I will say that Patriots Pointe was built by the same people that built Spring Forest at Deerfield. The room layouts are supposed to be about the same, and we really liked that place.

From reviews the biggest downside was that just outside is a complex that is quite a bit older and cheaper, and apparently people from there have a tendency to vandalize the cars in Patriots and the kids sometimes go take over the pool and cause trouble.

Heritage seemed to be away from most everything else, so that does not seem to have been such a problem as Pariots and Ashford Lakes (which has a trailer park behind it). A coworker said his ex-wife lived there for a while and had no problems.

^Yea we went after church and a ride to Burlington on Sunday. It was great. Had the applejack chicken sandwich and got some peach cobbler for dessert. Shit was fantastic!

Just thought I'd BTTT this thread and mention that I have renters for my house, and are narrowing it down to Mebane, and most likely, to Spring Forest at Deerfield. They have a good middle of the road price, nice pool (which is what my kids care about), go to Audrey Garrett just around the corner, and right close to the interstate for my commute to Chapel Hill. Looking to move in mid-May now.
