My brother and I have been working on garage doors with our Dad forever. He has a garage door business on the side for a little extra income/hobby/whatever. Now that we are in Raleigh, and he's back home, so we don't do jobs with him much anymore, but we'd like to keep working on them/putting them up/etc. on the side. So, what we'd like to offer, is our service to you. I can guarantee two things - 1) We'll be cheaper than garage door companies out there and 2) We won't be able to provide you with service faster than them. If you need something done right now, call a company, but if you've got some time, we'll do the work just as well at a fraction of the cost.

Why would you advertise that you can't provide service as quickly as the competition?

He is being honest, if the spring breaks with both of your family cars inside you want to call someone that can get to you as soon as possible. He clearly isn't the guy for that but for casual door replacements or maintenance he would be a good option. I might need something soon, debating it over with the wife.

^ exactly

This isn't my livelihood. It's something I enjoy doing on my free time. As such, I'm not worried about competition. If you have a situation like mentioned above, feel free to shoot me a message and I can give you some advice if you like. I'd basically just tell you, pull the string to disengage the motor, pick the door up, and clamp a couple of vice grips to the rails to hold the door up while you get your car out. If you want me to fix it after that, I'll check my availability (which runs something like TWC's installation service), but if you need it fixed that night/next day then I am not your guy to do the fixing.

Sure - if you'll PM me the make and model of your opener (the motor) I'll hunt down a compatible keypad entry system for it.

For future reference - if you have a Wayne Dalton door (with the spring on the inside of the rod) then you should probably contact a Wayne Dalton dealer to get work done to it. I can still do about 90% of things with the door, but don't have the proper stuff or experience working with them to feel confident in making adjustments or replacing parts.

I've now only seen 2 WD doors - but both were in the Raleigh area - so I'm sure there are more around here.

i've got a wayne dalton door. sometimes it goes down half way (or less, or more) and then goes back up, i stop it and start it downward again and it closes. sometimes this happens a couple times in a row, and sometimes it doesn't happen for a month.

i've tried greasing the rails, rollers and chains with garage door lubricant, making sure all the bolts connections are secure, and making sure the eye is clear. any other suggestions??

it isn't a big enough issue to call someone out to fix, because it will work...but it is a bit of an annoyance.

It sounds like the door's safety mechanism is kicking in, thus causing the door to go back up. There are two triggers that would cause this.
1) The sensors located on the rail at the bottom of each side of the door are triggering it or
2) Something is pushing against the door.

For #1 - check out this article:
http://www.ehow.com/how_4621823_align-garage-door-sensors.html

For #2 - If the door runs 'jerky' or doesn't otherwise run smoothly, this is the likely culprit. There could be an issue with either the force applied by the motor or something out of alignment. If there is too much force, it will cause the door to be pushed up against the track (thus pinching it in position) causing it to think there is an object under the door - so the motor pulls it back up. There should be a knob on the motor that indicates force adjustment. Turn it so that the motor excerpts less force and run the door up and down a few times. If the issue persists, then the other issue that may be present is the alignment. If that's it, stuff will need to be adjusted. Since it is a Wayne Dalton door, I may or may not be able to make those adjustments depending where they need to be made. If they required tension to be removed from the door, you'd need to talk to a Wayne Dalton representative (at this time anyways, I'm reading up on WD doors since I've had a few people ask me about them, and I'll see about possibly working on some of those at some point).

I've got a one car garage that needs to have the door replaced at some point. I have no idea of the cost. What kind of price range am I looking at? I imagine the labor is somewhat of a fixed cost. So what would that be and where is a good place to look at options on doors?

The cost really depends on the type of door you want to put in. the basic steel with no insulation is the cheapest. With insulation, reinforcement, windows or a mixture of these the price goes up. Also, will you need a new motor? Will I be taking down the old door as well? I put up amarr doors for new installs. If you will pick out a style of door you want from their website (amarr.com) and answer the above, then I can give you a better estimate. Replacement could run from 500 to well over 1000 depending on your desires/needs.

any chance of coming to fayetteville? i'm not in any kind of rush.

Basically we have a detached 2 car garage with two heavy 13ish foot wooden doors. (think big enough to fit an RV) when you try to open the left door the motor spins non-stop but the door doesn't move, it's like something isn't engaged.

the door on the right opens about 25% makes a loud bang then closes back. the only way to get the door to open completely is to hit the button, run to the door, and push it up. to close that door, you have to hit the button, it goes about 50% makes a loud noise and stops. after this happens you rinse and repeat two more times before it finally closes. the closing side doesn't need any pulling, just 3+ button presses with a lot of loud banging in between.

thoughts? ideas? things to try?

For the left door - there is a good chance something isn't engaged. I'd start off by checking two different things. 1st - see if the trolley on the track is attached to the door. Test this by standing under the track and see if you see anything moving. If something's moving, it's the trolley, and there is an issue with its attachment to the door. Most likely culprit is is the emergency pull handle is stuck so that it won't allow the door to connect to the trolley. If you don't see anything moving, your drive might be disengaged from the motor. Grab a ladder, look on top of the motor, and see if it is hooked up. If it is, give the motor a run and see what happens. Describe your results from these tests once you find them.

For the right door, something is out of alignment. The noise you are hearing is something getting stuck at a time it isn't supposed to. Some adjustments should be able to remedy that. Look around the door, see if you can see it hitting something. Tell me what you find.

I may or may not like to head out that way - it's a bit of a haul for me, but I grew up just a bit from Fayetteville so it is possible. If you could, PM me your address and I'll check out where you are. It may be that I could reference you to my Dad (who taught me all this stuff) and he could check out your issues. He lives in Northern Sampson County and still does garage door work.

We bought the house and the people before us took the stuff that makes the doors go up and down.

Can you get the opener for a discount? If not, where would you recommend I buy one. I would let you install def. since I have been in no rush to fix it. Also, someone hit our doors and I am going to need new ones. Do you know where I can get that for a reasonable price?

They took the opener with them?...

The general public can find openers for a discount online. It's basically whoever is having a sale - Sears, Amazon, etc. Since my Dad still runs his business back home, I can get doors and parts at his retailer price or whatever. I'll get some details from you, see what you need, and compare prices online vs. what he can get it at. See what we can work out there.

For the doors - those pretty much have to come new from the retailer (if you buy them online, the shipping costs would be HUGE).

Talking about openers... do you install openers? I am looking at signing a contract on a new house and garage door will be there but no opener. Of course builder wants some ungodly amount to install. The opener needs some bracing because it will be about 6' from the top of the garage.

I can install openers. Would want to check out the place before giving a price. Some things might need to be done to prepare the place to install one, so that may be what's up with the price.

I need you to come by and look at my door and setup. I have a really short ceiling in my garage and whoever put the door in did a slapdick job back in the day and it needs updating anyway.

Shoot me a PM if you have some time in the next week or so. I live off Glenwood right near Glen Eden Rd.
