I was happily surprised to find that in Maryland, almost all diners, restaurants, burger joints, delis, etc.... also serve beer... and good beer at that.

It's nice to sit down on a weekend for a nice sandwich, and a craft beer.

New Jersey also. I saw it as a bad thing, that a liquor license is so prohibitively expensive. They also charge a $5 "uncorking fee," but I guess it's still cheaper than paying restaurant $wine

Really? It's pretty common and almost every restaurant allows it.

My family had a party of 10 for Christmas Eve dinner in Walnut Creek and we brought our own win (3 or 4 bottles) and paid a $7 uncorking fee for each. We were hardly the only one's doing it that night either.

$7 is a pretty reasonable corking fee. My friend was saying a lot of the ones in Chicago don't charge any corking fee. That's pretty cool.

I do know of a few restaurants in Raleigh that will let you bring in a bottle of wine but then charge a $15-20 corking fee. I don't really count those as BYOB with a corking fee that high

The nicer restaurant on Hillsboro across the street from campus used to allow this. Uncorking fee of course, but they would even chill it for you before serving in some kind of blast chiller.

This is the thing I miss most when I come back from visiting Wisconsin/Illinois. Also, the further you get away from larger cities, the worse it gets.

My favorite bar to go to during the summers in AB is semi byob. Basically it's on the pier so you can bring a cooler as long as you are sitting out on the pier...

It's not so much the expense I don't think as the limitation on licenses. For every 3,000 people in a municipality, 1 serving license can be issued to a restaurant or bar. For every 7,500 people, one retail store license can be issued.

You can take your own wine to a lot of restaurants, they just charge you a corking fee. I've never heard of anyone taking beer or liquor, but wine for sure. It's kind of tasteless to take something that is actually on their wine list though.

I always thought BYOB was due to places not being able to obtain liquor licenses, thus the absence of them in NC would suggest that it's not that hard/expensive to get one here.

Which is a good thing, especially for businesses.

And not so much for trashy people that like the idea of carrying a six pack into restaurants.

BYOB is allowed in NC...I always assumed that most places didn't use/advertise it because you make more money selling beer than you do letting people bring it in. Also, there is a wide-ranging conspiracy theory that Raleigh locales are mobbed up and exclude certain things (including any titty bars besides the one off Yonkers)

I don't find that unreasonable. I think the average corking fee is around $12. I think they should be around $12-15.

IMO, you bring wine to a restaurant because it's a really nice wine that you can't get at that restaurant (at least an $75 bottle). Don't bring your $3 chuck from Trader Joes or even your $10 or $20 bottle from Total Wine. First, there are plenty of great $30 bottles of wine that you can get at a restaurant...so don't think you're getting shitty wine if you order the lowest priced bottles. Second, if you can't afford a bottle of wine at a restaurant, then don't go out. If you like the food there so much, order takeout and drink your Piggly Wiggly wine at home.

And high corking fees are there to prevent people from bringing in their $10/15 bottles. I'm not going to pay a $12 corking fee unless I'm bringing in a baller ass wine. Alcohol is where restaurants make their highest profit margins anyways...it doesn't make sense to let everyone bring in whatever they want to drink.

BYOB restaurants are common in counties that don't have liquor by the drink. The ABC law allows a restaurant to sell alcohol or BYOB, but not both. Since it is more profitable to sell alcohol, that's what restaurants do.

I've got to say...I never appreciated Mission Valley enough until the last three years or so. The old school chairs that fully rock rather than having a fixed seat and a back that can recline are way more comfy than anything at the modern theaters. The beer, laid back attitude, and lack of hundreds of high schoolers getting dropped off by their moms makes it a win.

Yeah, bringing in your own wine is pretty much acceptable at any of the nicer restaurants in Raleigh. They may not advertise that they allow it, but most, if not all of them are cool with it and will just charge you a corking fee.
