Incorrect. Sure, calling it a "mix tape" when it isn't a tape is silly. To say that it is pointless to put a mix on anything other than a cassette is even sillier.

instead of a properly timed and gain equalized cut done with expert use of a pause button

if you want to make a 45 minute mix CD, fine

but the romance of the tape is lost this way

^^ i never said it was pointless to make a mix CD, but play to the strengths of your format. i'm not going to end my mix CD at minute 45 when i can go to minute 80, so why limit a soundcloud mix to the length of a tape?

not to go off on a tangent, but this is the reason i hated the sin city movie. sure, it was a neat idea to copy the book shot-for-shot, but in doing so the film failed to take full advantage of its medium.

This is what you're neglecting. "It's the thought that counts." So you're saying that if I spend several days meticulously selecting songs and arranging them it still won't be as romantic as someone who throws a few songs onto a cassette simply by virtue of being on an outdated medium?

^^^ except it took 4-5 hours to cut the mix in a DAW

because the mix is a little more complex than a series of cross fades

I get what you're saying but I say that the mixtape exists as a form beyond the tradition (and social gesture)
