^^^

what is the difference between numerical value and absolute value. As I always understood it, they are synonymous (at least in this context).

numerical value is the value and direction. absolute value is just the magnitude.

to illustrate: what is the (numerical) value of -10 apples? it's surely not the same numerical value as 10.

try to tell someone with -10 apples that they have the same value as the guy holding 10 apples. not only do they not have ten apples, they don't even have zero apples. they got negative 10 apples, meaning they've got to get up off their ass and go rustle up 10 apples, and give them to the man, before they can even get to the point where they have nothing.

as for what is the value of two five dollar bets with lafta? the answer is zero. cause ain't nobody gettin paid.

I agree with joe_schmoe

i've never heard "numerical value" to mean absolute value, and I can't find anything that supports this definition.

So if you have -10 apples, the numerical value would be 10. The negative sign is just a unit vector denoting the direction in which the change of possession of apples needs to occur.
