Which of them do you prefer?

Toyota Supra Twin Turbo
Mazda RX-7 Twin Turbo
Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo
Acura NSX

While all of them have aspects that I like, I think I'd have to choose the NSX over the others simply for it's handling.

The NSX and RX-7 are the best handlers. The NSX and Supra probably the most reliable. 300zx the most common and cheapest.

I would choose the 300zx

How can you forget the Mitsubishi 3000 GT-VR4??? That's the 3rd member of the Supra and 300ZX 300 hp club!

Looks:
Mitsu
Acura
Supra

Handling:
Acura

Straight-line:
Supra
RX-7

RX-7, at least until it blows up, which just happened as I was typing this.

also there were 2 RX-7s in the Fast and the Furious.

also, NOC about the 3000 gt. 3800 lb is just stupid.

I like the supra the best... i almost bought a 93 hardtop tt when i turned 16 but my parents wouldn't let me because "insurance would be too high" and at the time i may have been buying the car but i was on their insurance. anyway 2 years later F&F came out and i couldn't afford one anymore. :-( so i went with a jeep.

I'd like a 3 rotor rx7 i think that would be sweet.

the rest of the cars mentioned don't make my junk move at all.

RX7 -> unreliable, not very fast. Super nimble, great fun to drive.
NSX -> lots of $, painfully slow. Fun to drive.
3000GT -> looks OK, terrible reliability, over complexity, and not very fun to drive (weight).
Supra -> reliable, too heavy to be fun to drive.
300zx -> cheap enough that it's relative unreliability maybe bearable. Not super fun, but not boring.

944 turbo (s) -> cheap to buy, reliable, lots of fun. Will buy again, A++++

agreed. interior looks like an Integra GS-R.

Don't confuse the 91-93 with the later ones. 94-95 and 98-99 are the most desireable of the later ones. They more much stronger and more reliable for both the engine and drivetrain. With a stronger clutch the AWD launches are insane on these later model cars--maybe not 997 Turbo or R35 GT-R level. Interior is pretty good on these cars and well-built, except for the seats on the pre-96 models. It's a very comfortable car for what it is.

They still have their problems. If you ever drive a stock one they feel like a luxury V8 of the era. You can barely tell they are boosted. Interior is nice, like a mid 90s Lexus as you'd expect.

Definitely the most common of the bunch. I like the look from the front and the back, especially on the later models with the larger spoiler. The interior is very dated looking. This one also came out before every other car in this class so you would expect it to be a little behind performance-wise.

Quote :

In some cases they aren't as unreliable as you've heard, but they are still unreliable compared to the other cars here. I don't know about the one you drove, but in stock form it's no slower than any other car in this list and it has more torque than an NSX. The interior is the most unique but also the most brittle. It's easily the most dangerous of these cars to drive. You can kill yourself easily in one.

RX7TT's a very unreliable platform. It's not what I've heard, it's what I've heard, seen, witnessed, over and over and over.

Having spent many many hours working on them, I'm not going to sit there and argue that an FD Rx-7 is reliable. What I will say is that there is a difference between the problems that occur due to design flaws, and the problems that occur because of improper modifications, poor maintenance, and other bad decisions by the owners.

I'll admit that I did forget about that one, but as mentioned by others, it's weight is an issue. It's a fat person away from being a Crown Vic.

they really weren't that much heavier than Supras/Z32's once 4WS, ECS, active aero, active exhaust, etc were removed in the later models. not to mention they also came with rear seats.

NSX - 3,093lbs. (93-97) - 270 bhp (C30A)
RX-7 TT - 2,830 lbs. - 261 hp
Supra TT - 3,417 lbs. - 320 hp
Nissan 300ZX TT - 300 hp
- 2 seater twin-turbo hard top - 3,310 lbs.
- 2 seater twin-turbo T-top - 3,474 lbs.
- 2+2 twin-turbo T-top - 3,602 lbs.
Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 - 3,800 lbs. - 296 hp

Get the 300ZX TT hard top 2 seater and you save yourself the weight of two fat people, haha.

For the 3000GT it depends on the model year because certain options were not always available. 3700-3800 lbs is current gen Camaro/Mustang/Challenger weight. You can hardly call it especially heavy these days.

Yeah but the new GT has 412 hp. SS Camaro has 426 hp. RT Challenger with the 5.7L engine has 375 hp, while the SRT8 with the 6.1 has 425 hp. That's a good bit more than the VR4's 296.

Of course you could buy a 3000GT VR4 in decent shape for around $10k then spend a few grand and pump it up to that level, and save $15-20k though.

where are you getting 296hp from? It's 320 hp.

you can buy a 2nd gen VR4 in good condition for 6 - 8k these days. change out the seats and get some lighter wheels and you'll pretty close to the poopra's weight. and if you factor in AWD it's not all that bad for a car that came out 15-20 years ago. i tracked mine up until 2 years ago and it glowed on the track. you don't notice the weight all that much and it handled very well at high speeds. probably not great for autocrosses but on road courses it really shines.

fun fact - despite their reputation, they are in fact easier to work on than Z32's, because you can actually get to both turbos with the engine still in the car (due to them being tiny as balls).

BMW, whaaaaaaat??

NSX has the most comfortable seats of any car I've ever been in.

950 mile road trip, 17 hours of driving, 6 trips down and back on the Tail of the Dragon as well as the Blue Ridge Parkway. not even 3 tanks of gas. All in 1 day. I'll take a silver one plz. Oh wait..

c32b. Win.

So do you think importing the R32 GTR will be easier once it reaches the magic 25 years or do you think the DOT will continue to fuck over anyone that once one thanks to MOTOREX?

I wouldn't mind a turboed KA 240 though either... thats kind of a beast in disguise.

and i would LOVE to Turbo and speed swap an SVX that imho could be the only car that would compete with a skyline but still has the hindrance of an open deck aluminum block.

Yep, I have a buddy at work who used to race Barber Formula cars. He has a Stealth TT and an E46 M3, and tracks both of them. He said he likes them both.

I had assumed that based on the original post we were just talking about Japanese sportscars sold in the US. If you're opening it up to JDM only models the list just grows too long.

Well I put Sports/Supercars because they are technically supercars for Japanese sakes, but compare them to our normal thought process for a supercar and they don't measure up. Normally when I think about a supercar from the 90s I think of 911 Turbos, F355s, F50s, Diablos, EB110s, F1s, and XJ220s.

I was referring to cars that were available in the US, and those that were mentioned I think all have sub-6 second 0-60 times. If you want to open it up to talk about internationally available Japanese "supercars" from the 90s, then go ahead.
