Waiting it out is an option... if you don't have to fill up for 6+ months.

Most of them are 50cc. Ricky's is 110cc and I think fuel injected.

^ at only 55-60mpg and $6400, i'd rather buy a motorcycle...though a 500cc scooter is sick in its own way

track (a dutch company: http://www.dieselmotorfiets.nl/) makes an 45hp 800cc I3 bike that runs on diesel/PPO with a CVT, so it can get 112mpg and tops out at about 110mph

it's also $27,000

i'd ride it

the aprilia mana 850 has a CVT and they claim 76hp, but 50mpg is pretty bad

I've never read on craigslist

"Selling car because regular gas fucked up the engine"

The whole premium only thing seems like a myth to me.

^ I'll spare you from a technical reply. If the owner's manual says use premium, then use it.

I think I paid around $3.90 for premium when I filled up in Raleigh a few days ago.

^ and ^^

I respectfully disagree with both of you. Modern engine management systems are more than capable of handling lower octane gasolines. Sure, performance might be a little less...BUT in almost all circumstances, you won't incur damage to your engine. If you have performance mods, then that's a whole new ballgame. For this exercise, we'll assume you don't.

Will your mileage suffer? Possibly some. Then it'll be up to you to decide whether or not to run premium; the whole thing becomes an argument in economics.

And if your car wasn't specifically optimized for premium, you're definitely wasting your money.

In this day and age, there's enough thought in the design process to protect the car (and its owner) from a lot of stupidity.

There is, however, a handful of cars where this isn't true. Most of you can't afford them.

I see what you are saying but if the car has a factory turbo (some guy's wife's Vdub) I would not run it on 87 continously.

I have tried running 87 octane on my Infiniti but the gas mileage suffers and I save no money

had to put a tank of 87 in my bike when i ran it out at some podunk station in the sticks, that's all they had

definitely noticed a performance/mileage hit. it wasn't night and day, but i noticed it and i wouldn't want to do it when i didn't have to. then again the thing ain't exactly stock

on the plus side, just rejetted my carb and, in addition to a crapton more power, went from getting about 100 miles out of a tank (before reserve, about 30mpg) to 120 and still climbing haven't even dialed it in completely right just yet but i'm hoping to hit 150 (45-50mpg) when it's 100%. Aftermarket intake jet kit was trash.

this 110mpg mess is ridiculous though...something that can do 60mph and get that kind of mileage should be essentially mandated. "Any licensed citizen of legal age must own a superscoot before legally purchasing a 4-wheeled gasoline vehicle"

One exception to the rule...engines under boost need a little more margin...but not so much if they're not driven hard.

Knock sensors are often not fast enough.
