Quote : | "Brandon Davies was dismissed from BYU's basketball team after he admitted to having sexual relations with his girlfriend, the Salt Lake Tribune reported Wednesday.
BYU's honor code forbids students from having premarital sex and instructs them to "live a chaste and virtuous life."
The newspaper reported that Davies met with school officials on Monday.
BYU officials would only confirm Wednesday that Davies wasn't involved in anything criminal that resulted in his dismissal from the team.
University spokeswoman Carri Jenkins said an honor code review is under way to determine if the BYU sophomore will be allowed to remain in school, as well as his status with the team next season.
BYU's honor code also requires students to be honest; abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee and substance abuse; and attend church regularly.
The school announced the dismissal on Tuesday night after being made aware of the violation Monday -- the same day that BYU (27-2, 13-1 Mountain West) vaulted to No. 3 in the ESPN/USA Today and AP polls.
In their first game without Davies on Wednesday, the Cougars lost 82-64 to New Mexico. BYU guard Jimmer Fredette said after the game Davies had apologized to his teammates.
"He told us he was sorry and let us down," Fredette said. "We told him it's OK. Sometimes in life we make mistakes. We've got to play through it."
Davies had started 26 of 29 games and averaged 11.1 points and a team-leading 6.2 rebounds.
The sophomore was a key member of BYU's frontcourt and was instrumental in helping contain San Diego State's forwards in the Cougars' 80-67 victory over the Aztecs.
No one discussed details of what occurred with Davies after the game but BYU coach Dave Rose discussed the school's controversial honor code.
"Everybody who comes to BYU, every student if they're an athlete or not an athlete, they make a commitment when they come," Rose said of a code that also forbids use of alcohol and coffee and requires students to be honest and attend church regularly. "A lot of people try to judge if this is right or wrong, but it's a commitment they make. It's not about right or wrong. It's about commitment."
Davies was one of Fredette's favorite targets in the post, ran the floor well and gave the Cougars length and size inside." |
Definitely some mixed emotions here. While I obviously think this is the dumbest policy in the world, apparently it is an honor code established by the university, and this guy broke it. I have to give props to BYU for actually enforcing it during a time where they have had a legitimate shot at a National Title. Other institutions who claim to have a stringent honor code, such as the Naval Academy, have made exceptions for athletes in the past (there was a huge marijuana scandal a couple years back).
In other news, BYU got blown out by 18 points at home to unranked New Mexico last night in their first game since Davies was kicked off the team.

While I am sure the rate of people having sex is much lower at BYU than at most schools, I am sure there are tons of people banging each other.
That is a really good question though.... who in their right mind would tell on a star of the basketball team? 3/3/2011 7:38:59 AM |

If a player is booted from school, does the one-year sit out rule still apply?
Maybe it was his quickest (and most pleasurable) ticket out of town? And it's one of the circumstances where it makes the school look worse than the player.

BYU's season is over, stinks that something this minor is ruining a great run they were having.
Yeah, I figured he got snitched on, wouldn't make sense to confess to it, especially not until after the season, haha.

Whether you like the principles or not, everyone that attends the university, mormon or not, knows there is an honor code, what's in the honor code, and what happens if you break it.
And if you're mormon, like 90+% of BYU students and athletes are, the honor code is nothing new.

I guess I am still missing the point even after reading your posts.
Are you pointing out that Mormons are kinda weird? Yeah, you're pretty spot on there. But on the same token, all the Mormons I know are genuinely good people who do things that are often really unselfish. It's one thing that is ingrained in their religion. Case in point, I posted on my FaceBook a couple weeks ago, asking if anyone knew anything about the computers at my local library. I needed an add-on that Microsoft Excel 97 didn't support, and I figured I'd just drive to the library and use their software (I live in a tiny village in New York). A guy that I haven't seen in almost 5 years, and who I really didn't know "real" well pm-ed me and offered to send me a copy of Office 2000. I assumed it would be a bootlegged copy, but he sent me the original disc as well as the packaging with the registration key.
Now I know I am probably going to get some haters saying "That's not a big deal," or "That has nothing to do with his religion," or something to that effect. But honestly, for someone to specifically go out of his way to mail me an original copy of Microsoft Office meant quite a lot to me. Obviously all Mormons aren't like this, but I do know quite a few, and for those who actually follow the religion, my experiences have all been positive.
So yeah, do I think their rules of no caffeine, alcohol, or premarital sex are silly, outdated, and based on an absolutely crazy system of beliefs? YES. But do I have immense respect for them and the fact that they actually stand up for their beliefs and their honor code? Also YES. 3/3/2011 9:50:23 AM |

Also, you can't fault the university at all here. The kid knew what the honor code was and what the consequences were if it was broken, yet he still decided to break the rules. As crazy and ridiculous as some of you think this honor code is, the rules at Liberty University are probably even worse.3/3/2011 9:59:16 AM |

I disagree....the athletes that go to a school like BYU are likely much more mature than the likes of John Wall and OJ Mayo, etc.... I would think that the BYU athletes are better upholders of the rules from their first day on campus than Wall and Mayo will ever be in their lifetimes.

In terms of their religious culture, the Mormons have a lot in common with the Jews. They are a tight nit group that tends to marry and hire within and have an above average income/ wealth.
However, Jews are much more accepting of other cultures and people (i.e. gays and blacks) than the Mormons.

it was one guy who was retained on a 3-star admiral's decision that the evidence showed he had unknowingly ingested after he popped positive. the guy was then kicked off the team and subsequently left the school.
but even places like West Point and Navy have remediation options for less severe infractions of the honor code. BYU is pretty much the only 100% zero tolerance of all offenses I've ever heard of

ITT we oversimplify things to save face at the Naval Academy.
I read several articles on this. Apparently the dude was a piece of shit with multiple infractions. The Admiral's decision to retain him was based largely upon pressure to keep the football team good. How fucking stupid do you have to be to unknowingly smoke pot? What kind of crowd do you have to be hanging with, and what kind of places do you have to be going? I would bet a lot of money that this douchebag knew what he was doing and figured he wouldn't get caught, and then claimed he didn't realize there was pot in what he was smoking.3/3/2011 11:45:19 AM |

I agree with that as well, as much as I agree with the retarded rules. If you accept a scholarship there, you agree to abide by their rules.
Now, should there be an institutional rejection by the MWC or NCAA of a school that operates on archaic rules that are well beyond mores at other colleges? I would say yes. But as of today there isn't, so can't really fault BYU for being consistent with their own twisted sense of integrity.

That's just as stupid as what you're complaining about. No one is being harmed (stunted, perhaps, but not harmed) by BYU's rules, and no one is being forced to go to BYU. It's a free country, and a private university can do as they see fit.3/3/2011 12:44:51 PM |

sure they can, but a conference or even the NCAA can similarly tell BYU that they don't want to play ball with them because we don't like the way you treat your students.
