"For her to even think that was not insulting, that was not disgraceful, she should apologize," she said. Crumpton sent her an e-mail in which he said he didn't find the image racist. "Of course, I am not in the shoes of those that would be offended by this type of picture," Crumpton wrote in the e-mail. "Perceptions are reality in the public world, so we all should be more concerned about the impact of what we say and do." Dowdy said the words "social services" in the department's name should mean something to Potts. "(We should be) a department that loves people, that cares for people, but for you to send out images like this, it proves you don't even care about your own employees," she said."

The part in bold made me and my wife chuckle only because this lady is like 35 years old and we wondered how many hangings she has witnessed.

I had a girl in my Early American History class get all up in arms because the professor wanted us to write a paper on whether it was worse to be a slave in the South or a factory worker in the North pre-Civil War. Started hollering about how the subject of the paper was racist blah blah blah. Professor told her that would be a fine starting point for her paper which got the girl more worked up

I had to write that same paper. Was an interesting topic actually. The workers up north were slaves to the mills and barely made enough $ to feed their families after working 15 hr days and were extremely destitute. I believe the author was George Fitzhugh? Made the case that slaves in south were better off bc many slaves were well fed and treated better than the workers up north. They just didn't have the freedom to come and go as they pleased, which is pretty crucial.

however growing up I never thought of them as racist symbols... i associated them with the old west, and we even had a teacher who taught us how to tie one. Nobody was offended then.



that being said, it is pretty stupid to send out mass joke emails like this to your work contacts in general because you never know who will be offended, even if your intention was not to offend.
