gah - I can't even visit the ted site until they have a major conference. Weeding through all the liberal BS, people doing interpretive dance and singing to get to the actual science is just not worth it. After a summer conference, however, it's the tits.

Hans Rosling is easily my favorite:
http://www.ted.com/talks/hans_rosling_shows_the_best_stats_you_ve_ever_seen.html

Clickthrough to see his updated data too. Stunning.

dude builds sweet custom houses on the cheap from recycled/reclaimed/re-appropriated materials...cool stuff

^I just watched that one. I swear I thought I was listening to my dad talk about some of his projects around his house. That dude looks like him and may even dress like him. That guy just needs salt and pepper hair, an unkempt mountain main beard, some bulky silver with turquoise rings, a harley, wear heavy black steel toed boots with pouch strap for a blade, and have a gold rhymed front tooth and you have my dad.

TED used to be good, but now they'll let any retard wander in off the street and speak. They had David Blaine on a while back...he broke down and cried for some reason on stage, pretty sure he trolled them, it was pathetic.

And that woman who had the stroke was a waste of 5 minutes of my life. You could hear the audience groaning at her when she started going on about that peaceful everyone is connected energy bullshit.

TED should have a hook to drag these fools off stage.

Agree on Hans Rosling. Another favorite of mine:

James Howard Kunstler: http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/james_howard_kunstler_dissects_suburbia.html

Had the opportunity to go to TedXTriangle:
http://tedxtalks.ted.com/search/?search=TEDxTriangle

That was a very inspiring and good time. Favorites were Hugh Hollowell and Joel Wiggins (Can't find Joel's presentation here.)

I was first introduced to TED via a presentation by Josh Prince Ramus (Architect):

Don’t mention income inequality please, we’re entrepreneurs
At this point, TED is a massive, money-soaked orgy of self-congratulatory futurism

http://www.salon.com/2012/05/21/dont_mention_income_inequality_please_were_entrepreneurs/singleton/

Quote :
"Strip away the hype and you’re left with a reasonably good video podcast with delusions of grandeur. For most of the millions of people who watch TED videos at the office, it’s a middlebrow diversion and a source of factoids to use on your friends. Except TED thinks it’s changing the world, like if “This American Life” suddenly mistook itself for Doctors Without Borders.

The model for your standard TED talk is a late-period Malcolm Gladwell book chapter. Common tropes include:

Drastically oversimplified explanations of complex problems.
Technologically utopian solutions to said complex problems.
Unconventional (and unconvincing) explanations of the origins of said complex problems.
Staggeringly obvious observations presented as mind-blowing new insights.
"

I chuckled

To be fair, the self-absorbed and money-soaked "entrepreneurs" are the backers and the organizers, not the presenters. They outsource that job, you know, the job that is the entire point of TED.

And TEDx isn't even organized by the elite. No really, it's a miracle that some of these ever manage to get a working microphone.

It is deeply concerning, however, that they managed to keep that one talk from ever seeing the internet. It just goes to show that a CC BY-NC-ND 3.0 license is meaningless if they allow themselves to censor it before they ever release it.

^ did you even read the followup on WHY it was censored? and not the shit floating around the internet that was based on assumptions and other made up shit. Also, if you actually watched the talk, you'd see very quickly why it was not selected to be published. It was garbage.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/06/business/media/ted-partners-with-pbs-for-education-program.html

Quote :
"In its first television foray, TED has joined forces with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the New York public broadcaster WNET for a one-hour special, “TED Talks Education,” to be broadcast on PBS on Tuesday. If it is successful, the program could become a template for future joint projects, said Juliet Blake, one of the show’s executive producers and the TED official charged with bringing the conferences to television."

one of my favorites is sugata mitra. http://www.ted.com/pages/sole_challenge#download

but that could also be influenced because I think that type of Indian accent is so cool/awesome to hear. Other than morgan freeman, this accent is my favorite narration voice.

TED is a scam. Think of it like scientology day camp. They work hard to build a cultish atmosphere, but ultimately all they want is money.
