The construction crew working on the park fubared something. Hit a gas line, created a superfluous paddle boat pond.

^Maybe not too fast. Going really fast could have torn through part of the bridge, spreading the deceleration over a distance and dissipating the energy by shearing the materials, whereas at a slower speed there could be less dissipation and more shock transferred to the surrounding area.

(In reference to above) I think my favorite part is not so much the boom sticking through the bridge, but the fact that the trailer has gotten completely smashed into the pavement such that you can't even see it under the excavator

But anyways, anyone have anything on the actual damage at Western/Pullen? I can't imagine it being nearly that severe considering they opened the bridge back up already.

about 15 years ago i was riding my bike on the bridge over 440 at Melbourne, when this very thing happened. shook the whole bridge, I thought i was gonna fall onto the freeway and die

you can still see the concrete repairs today.. check it out if you're on 440 west going under melbourne.

so that is what made me late today! i managed to get to pullen and make my detour to hillsborough...only to find out i couldn't make my little left and hit the light near tompkins like i always did (why'd they get rid of that?!)....had to turn around and take the damn traffic circle at which none of the damn idiots could figure out what the hell yield meant.....left my house 20minutes early so i could work on a presentation before class and managed to just barely get to class on time.

^ ya ya...i was trying to get to school early to do some work before class and instead i got there right before class started so my attempt at productivity was smushed. .
