Yep. They had the entire Talley ballroom full of long tables with a phone about every four feet. You walked up there carrying your course catalog and followed the pattern of dial...busy signal...dial...busy signal.. until you finally got through. God help you if you had a question for one of the roving advisors mid-call because it would time out and then you had to do it all over again.

Thankfully, by the time I was registering for my spring semester classes, the web version of TRACS existed.

After orientation you got savvy about it, having the number on speed dial, start calling the instant your class was allowed to register, and having a page with all the numbers already written out so you could dial the numbers asap to ensure you got the class/section you wanted.

Looking back, I would have done the following different:

Memory 1: Sign up for MA241
Memory 2: Sign up for PY208
etc.
Memory 7: Alternate sign up if I didn't get the MA241 I wanted.
etc.

99 was my freshman year and the campus computer system sucked but we were expected to rely on it. a lot of us registered by telephone for a couple of more years because their computer registration system was not reliable. If you youngsters hate webassign now, try using it in the early days. the cart was way before the horse.

I, too, showed up in '98, and yeah, TRACS was a gigantic asspain. I seem to remember using it in the spring, too, but I think by my 2nd year, you register on the internet.

I acted like a retard so the lady working at the library would come over and register me on TRACS. I just pretended it was a continual error to be blamed on the network because administrator overwrite privileges always got me the classes and the times I wanted
