I've always kinda wondered about this...how was a FREE phone service ever going to make money? I mean, I understand they have advertising, but still, I never really saw how Skype stayed afloat.

also, I know there are bunches of internet companies (Amazon, for example) which have always lost money, and yet have still contrived to be "profitable" in some sense...but damned if I've ever understood it

They charge for some services, business I think. I don't know if that entails more support cost for them or not, never looked into it. Microsoft might actually be able to make something off this since they can tie it in with a bunch of infrastructure they already have, but it's probably more for positioning.

^I know. I meant a fixed subscription charge. The fact that you can have a composite phone number and voice mail is quite useful.

Uh Google voice already charges for calls outside the us. So does Skype. Skype is a hella better teleconferencing service, Google voice is a better VoIP service.
