a few days before the Japan earthquake I saw the movie, "The Road", which then compelled me to read a few chapters out of the book by Cormac McCarthy.

If someone went in and changed 80% of the books of the bible, I doubt most people would notice.

I could only tell you what is in Genesis, Exodus, Psalms, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and Revelation. Granted, I know a lot verses/stories outside these books but I wouldn't be able to locate them off the top of my head.

BigHitSunday, the translation offering the greatest fidelity to the original texts (without sacrificing readability) is now the 1989 revision of the NRSV (available at the bottom of this page); it basically used the same modus operandi as the KJV, with the best source documents available at the time and language understandable to contemporary people (although "thee" and "thou" were going out of style even back in 1611).
The only translations even more literal than the NRSV (like the NASB and Apostolic Bible Polyglot) sound kinda broken because of the oddities of syntax, grammar, and diction in Ancient Hebrew, Ancient Greek, and Aramaic.

Finally, for the OP, the greatest LOL is that Zondervan just recently released a long-awaited 2011 revision of the NIV (still fairly literal but easier to understand, making it the most popular translation); it'll probably take a couple decades.

Sometimes I wonder why Christianity didn't take the path of Judaism before it or Islam after it, basically requiring Christians to learn and maintain the languages of the original texts in order to claim to comprehend the Word; I mean sure Judaism never spread over huge swaths of territory, but that kind of restriction never stopped Islam!
