I looked at the old threads about it but they are about 5 years old so stuff may have changed, especially accomodations, etc.. My wife and I thinking about going for our anniversary in June. (we were thinking orlando but decided against it). We went to Charleston last year and stayed at a bed and breakfast. We have both never been to Savannah. I looked at the visitor's website and have been doing my own research. It looks very similar to Charleston, but slightly less commercial and a little smaller. The main thing I need advice on is some good places to stay. We aren't restricting our search to only bed and breakfasts. hotels would be fine too. We would like to be near the historic district, as i imagine that's where we'd spend most of our time anyway. I saw the hilton historic which had prices for around 116 a night which looked great. any other advice or bed and breakfast recommendations? What about things to do? 3/27/2011 3:16:43 PM |

The gf and I stayed at Mansion on Forsyth Park when we went last July. It's a nice hotel, but I'd recommend something closer to the river as it was a bit of a hike to the attractions and the walk was a bit sketchy on a week night.
Head out to Tybee Island at some point. It's maybe 20 minutes from downtown but its a beautiful drive that takes through marshlands and past a civil war fort.
Also plan on packing twice as many shirts as you think you'll need as you will sweat through them quickly in June.] 3/27/2011 4:20:54 PM |

We've narrowed it down to 3 places... old harbour inn on river street holiday inn express historic district hampton inn historic district
they all look like they are within walking distance of everything. is this true?
a bunch of people on tripadvisor said you could park your car and never move it... i have no clue what there is to even go see down there 3/27/2011 4:47:45 PM |

Have you looked at the Marshall House? My fiance and I stayed there last year and loved it. It's a historical hotel with lots of character. They've got free wine and cheese from 5-7 every night. It's also centrally located with great rooms. I think I paid about $150 a night for it. 3/27/2011 6:17:56 PM |

I have stayed at the new holiday inn express. The staff is great there and it was very clean. I might also suggest the river street inn. I stayed there the following year. The river street inn was great because it was in the old cotten exchange building and has balconies over river street. It is just a bit more expensive than the holiday inn express, but its worth the extra money.
Also, the holiday in express and the river street inn are in the middle of everything. You are less than a 5-10 min walk from everthing. They have haunted pub tours and haunted ghost walks that you can go on and you are 15-20 min from tybee island. Paula Dean's restraunt is a tourist trap, if you want her food, you need to go to her brothers restraunt, Uncle Bubba's. If you want brittish style and good drinks, molly mcphearsons is really good. If you wanna go to a small bar, Abe's on Lincoln is a good place. If you want anyother suggestions, PM me.

Everywhere is within walking distance, really. Savannah is not that large.
Last time I was there I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn Historic District. It's not right on the river, but it's one block over. My ex and I walked all over town from there.
There are more art galleries than you can shake a stick at. That'd be my suggestion. Hit up art galleries until your eyes bleed. 3/28/2011 1:39:33 AM |

I just got back from Savannah about a week ago. Stayed at the Four Points Sheraton because got it cheap for $80/night. Don't stay there. The recommendations posted already are good.
As far as things to do...
IMO any more than 2 or 3 nights in Savannah would be too much. There is a lot to see, but once you see so many squares, historic house of some guy you might remember from history class, art galleries, and bars it all seems to lose its luster a bit. My girl and I took a trolley tour one day which is a good way to see where everything is and the places you might want to go back to. We used it as a bar hopping tool. Would get off at one stop, imbibe a few beers, get back on, and head to the next watering hole. City Market is a good place for art galleries and food. River St is obvious. Tons of bars, restaurants, and shops. Tubby's on River St. above Huey's was a good place to grab a beer and overlook the river at their outside bar. The Bohemian? Hotel along River St. has a rooftop bar. You don't have to be staying at the hotel to use it. Great views. We went up there during day and nighttime. Other parts of town...there is a toursity shopping district your wife might be interested in. I forget what street it was on because we didn't spend much time there. Has a lot of the chain crap and kinda cool boutiques too. One place I recommend everyone would go is Goose Feathers for breakfast/brunch/lunch. Look it up on tripadvisor. We got lunch there and it was the tits.
Oh and you can get a drink somewhere and they'll put it in a to-go cup for you and you can walk around town with it. Seriously underrated luxury.

we stayed at the hyatt regency on river st (found a good deal on priceline). aside from the silly $18/day mandatory valet parking, we really liked it. 3/28/2011 7:39:47 PM |

walk into a bar, and walk out with a to-go cup filled with beer. by far the coolest thing about the city (county actually), and there a lot of cool things there 3/28/2011 9:14:39 PM |

We stayed at the Ziegler House B&B a few years ago and loved it. One of the nice things about it was the slightly different take on the breakfast part--rather than having to come to a breakfast at a set time and sit with folks you don't know, the innkeeper delivers tasty fresh-baked pastries, juice, and other breakfast items to your room in late afternoon and you can eat them at your leisure the next morning. Lots of character, comfortable beds, and the innkeeper (Jackie) is very friendly also. Would definitely recommend.
And, yes, you don't really need a car at all within the historic district or the victorian district. If you're walking end to end it's a bit of a hike, but driving around you miss the gorgeous scenery. Use the car for trips to Bonaventure cemetery, Tybee Island, etc. and just walk around town. 3/29/2011 12:33:23 AM |

at the very least, you want to go downtown by the riverfront. I will warn you of this: Savannah has a serious inferiority complex when it comes to Charleston. Practically everything you will hear down there is "we have ..., just like Charleston" 3/29/2011 12:46:58 AM |

Yeah, when I was looking at websites and doing research I couldn't help but think....this place reminds me a lot like charleston...except there is a river instead of a harbor
We enjoyed Charleston last year, but part of me thinks this will be a lot of the same stuff. 3/29/2011 5:46:26 AM |

Savannah has the best st. patty's day party within driving distance of raleigh.
other than that it's like Charleston lite, as others have said. 3/29/2011 9:37:25 AM |
