I am seeking a talented programmer to work on a new project. The site would be very similar to the platform of ebay or amazon. Would allow people to create an account and create listings once verified etc. Some of the items needed would be the ability for account management, product management, notifications, paypal integration, browser/ search capabilities, geolocation, and a few others.
If interested you can email me at reilly@quoteretriever.com

What's your budget? What's the timeframe? 3/31/2011 6:46:22 PM |
Packman79 Veteran 306 Posts user info edit post |
The timeframe for completion is realistically 3-4 months or more.
No pay UPFRONT. But pay as you go.
I'm not looking for someone that would be learning on the job but instead someone that has some talent. There are also partnership possibilities in the new venture that can be discussed.

What is the value prop for your product? I mean, Amazon is pretty solid. What makes you think you can succeed against the largest online retailer? I'm sure you have this thought out, just wondering. 3/31/2011 8:11:04 PM |

You don't need a talented programmer.
You just need any one of a dozen different auction platforms + a VAR agreement to customize it to your needs. Shouldnt take 3 months and shouldnt cost you but a few grand. 4/1/2011 5:05:57 AM |

So then you just need an ecommerce platform out of the box, but then with some additional customizations and a design thrown on top?
There are tons of advanced ecommerce platforms out there already. You are probably best off picking one that has the features you need (or most of them), and then hiring someone that is familiar with THAT SPECIFIC PLATFORM, as your money will be much more efficiently spent. 4/1/2011 12:46:13 PM |

can you tell me what other details you would like at a minimum? i'm in with a few other people so i'm trying to get a low price before i talk what we all could really go crazy with. appreciate any other questions you could ask, rather think about them now than later

1. what are you trying to do
2. how large is the company
3. what is the sound of one hand clapping
4. SaaS and IaaS are two completely different animals. What do you want to do here? see #1 4/1/2011 9:22:29 PM |

I was not yet aware of people slapping aaS on the end of everything and creating new buzz words. I'm gonna have to try this.
Damn they already have an ambiguous one for everything...XaaS. Haha. 4/1/2011 9:49:21 PM |

^Really. Asking how much SaaS or IaaS costs is like saying:
"I want to move some stuff from one place to another, how much does it cost? I don't want to go crazy until I know how much it costs, so you tell me first."
Are we talking toothpicks or elephants? Across town or around the world? Once a year or every hour? Hundreds or millions? There are so many variables, it's an impossible question to answer without just outright lying. 4/1/2011 9:49:22 PM |

lol actually im being coy because i dont want to look stupid and start naming "buzzwords" like you all mentioned and act like i know exactly what i want...when i say what details do you need i mean what details do you need AS A programmer. if you want to hear the entire business plan ill lay it out for you but again, i assume if this was a face-to-face meeting with a client you wouldn't say "come back when you figure it out" you'd ask questions to figure out what i want.
here's what i'm trying to do: - regular law firm website - link on website to portal just for clients (need very secure login) - i need complete control of what clients can/cannot do/view - when payment clears, options are made available to them - i need tracking of when things are accessed and viewed (who, what, when, where) - it needs to be scaleable for grandpa and the 12 year old computer nerd (ease of use settings scalable up to very advanced settings - the client can pick and choose how indepth they want to be involved with little helper "?" as much as possible) - document review/editing (this is probably the most important of the options both in security and usability) - it would be nice if the ENTIRE profile/account for each client could be securely backed up (geo, local, whatever options you recommend) - ability to import some of the more common office/gmail/iCal files - last but not least video (skype-ish), audio (google voice), and secure chat integration and these need to be recorded and archived
now are there any questions i can further answer?

oh one more thing i need to add
the basis of the law firm is on contract drafting/negotiations and lets just say I or one of my associates would be a 3rd party to any negotiation (probably a minimum of 3 parties)
- i need party-to-party communication as well as party-to-customgroup, i don't want to be copy/pasting and i will sometimes want all parties present on video chat at the same time hearing the same information 4/2/2011 9:52:43 AM |

i *think* that your first question pertains to bandwith so i would say 80% of the time it would be for small things like reviewing documents and maybe 20% of the time will be intensive like video chat/remote support
it would be nice if multitasking could be handled, for example windowed video chat with 2 parties while you are accessing some other part of the portal
our goal is to start local (NC), then branch out to federal, then perhaps global so if anything you recommend is relativly easy/cheap to implement let's include it now
it needs to run 24/7 and be available to clients the same, hopefully as many as possible although i don't anticipate it being many4/2/2011 6:29:08 PM |

Now that is a contract brief. Thank you!
What you're asking for is definitely possible but is going to be seriously expensive. Technically its pretty feasible. But because of your security needs, most people won't touch it.
Basically you need a cms, Skype integration or a custom voip service, web based document authoring and a robust traceability system.
Given what you outlined above, and just totally off the cuff is say you're looking at 30-70k for a basic system to meet those needs. 4/2/2011 7:57:07 PM |

thank you very much for the post, now can you tell me what out of those options i listed are adding the most to the cost? lets talk a simpler version, maybe even just a prototype with no content writing 4/2/2011 8:35:48 PM |
smoothcrim Universal Magnetic! 18966 Posts user info edit post |
system integration is the most expensive part. almost every discrete component you mentioned already exists. getting them to talk, federating identity management and authorization granularity is going to be the hard part. however since most everything is a web service, tools like opensso and tivoli should make it all doable. i'd use as many google services and google's SAML extensions as i could. 4/2/2011 9:01:02 PM |

ive been told explicity to stay away from google. ive talked to people who follow the upcoming ABA guidelines for operating a virtual law office which should be out soon and rumor is that google will not meet those guidelines because they snoop through your shit. this stuff really needs to be on lockdown so if a cloud-based company offers such a guarantee or insures against it that would work but if this is doable on a small scale it might also be possible to buy some hardware ourselves. 4/2/2011 9:20:57 PM |

Actually now that I think about it, you might be able to do this with SharePoint + Lync + Exchange. SharePoint includes office live, and lync gets you the video and multiconferencing you need. If so, you can probably get the whole thing plopped together by a Microsoft VAR for a few grand. 4/3/2011 1:37:59 PM |
