ultrapure water in the atmosphere froze on contact with the 3 pitot tubes and basically shut down all of the automatic systems on the plane due to lack of airspeed input. this dumped manual control of all flight systems on the crew in 3 minutes or less and they weren't able to maintain controlled flight (they had no airspeed info either). the same situation has been recreated in simulators and crews have recovered, though they weren't several hours into a transatlantic flight in the middle of the night.
