I moved into a house and got DirecTV for TV, and ATT U-Verse for internet. I was getting frustrated with Timewarner (and DirecTV obviously has better TV options). Plus AT&T doesn't filter internet/put extra conditions on like ESPN3. Now AT&T U-verse has high setup fees ($150 for the installation, $100 for modem), but lower monthly charges. I have had them for nearly a month and they still haven't bothered to bury my line, so I am considering cancelling service while still in the 30 day trial period.
Are there any other decent high speed internet options (I'm thinking no). Alternatively, if I have to settle for roadrunner with no contract, can they provide the cable internet if DirectTV is tapped into the cable distribution wiring in my house (preferably without having cables running around and extra holes drilled into the exterior of my home)? 4/9/2011 12:50:48 PM |

TWC will have to run a separate cable for their modem if you do that. It's fairly unubtrusive, I have one network of coax going to every room from my aerial antenna, and another separate one for DirecTV. The TWC line for internet has to be yet another separate line, so it just comes through a little spot in the office floor and it's never been a problem. If I were more industrious I would run that line up into the wall plate, but it's really never bothered me enough to actually consider it. 4/9/2011 1:02:17 PM |

It's just pathetic that our options are:
a) Terrible customer service, unwillingness to complete installation tasks. b) Poor (but not as bad) customer service, they will dispatch technicians anytime you need but they can't resolve what are typically system issues. High fees, no ESPN3 unless you are a cable subscriber and no ESPN3 on XBox Live even if you are... 4/9/2011 1:16:23 PM |

twc extreme 30mbps/5mbps for $55/month is the best deal you can get on internet in the triangle area. i have directv and twc internet. I pay ~$100 for tv and internet combined. you can multiplex twc and directv on the same coax as they use different frequencies. 4/10/2011 12:44:12 PM |

How did you get extreme cable for $55/month?
I was getting basic cable and basic tv for 125$/month.
I dropped the TV since it was such a rip, but still paying $50ish/month for basic 10mb/sec cable 1/13/2013 5:12:58 PM |

^^I pay $105 for Digital Cable & Extreme Internet (30mbps) with Time Warner Cable. The modems they use for extreme is awful awful awful and I'm having the hardest time getting them to fix it or even address it (but it's well documented on the internet, and I've done most of what they should have done myself). You can tell the 30mbps on my desktop PC, but on my girlfriend's laptop (and wi-fi) she can't even stream low-res YouTube videos without extensive buffering.
Still a good price I guess. I looked at alternatives, but could only afford like 3mbps from U-Verse. 1/13/2013 10:20:42 PM |

if you aren't setting your ubee to bridge mode, you're doing it wrong. 1/13/2013 10:43:03 PM |

Yeah I know I really need to do that, but supposedly you have to have a tech sign off on it? I don't know why that would be. I'm only intermediate when it comes to this stuff... I can tinker directly with the router and do basic setup, and I've read about using the Ubee in Bridge mode, but I honestly just don't know how to do it currently. I should look it up, but mostly resources I see are out of date forum posts with incomplete instructions, et cetera.
In other words, I'll do it if I can read what to do. 1/14/2013 2:55:11 AM |

^^It's incredibly easy to change. Takes like 2 seconds, I picked my modem up from the store and set it up myself, a tech never even saw it.

That or dont get a Ubee
Had TWC out friday for a move of apartments, dude wanted to give me an ubee. Ive had nothing but crap from them. Told him if he took my motorola, id be on the phone as soon as he left (ive BC so theyve an SLA of 24 hrs) and theyd be bringing it back. He left it.
Fucked up the rest of my lines though Anyone know what tool to use to pop a time warner junction box? Its one of the hex that fit in a bit. I need to get in there to see what they disconnected and reconnect (or install) to a spltter. 1/20/2013 9:48:30 PM |

So.. any comments on this? How realistic is this to be available in two years? http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-57567229-93/first-steps-taken-to-build-gigabit-network-in-north-carolina/ 2/5/2013 7:53:38 PM |

TWC > ATT
Att might answer the phone faster, but you will surely get the stupidest fucker ever, then have to get transferred around like a hot potato, then after they close they will accidentally drop your call so you cant call back..... by the way ATT call centers close at 7pm, TWC is open until 11, and certain tech support is 24-7.
Also when you pay for a specific speed with TWC, that is the SLOWEST speed you will get, usually it is way faster. ATT you pay for 3, you will get 3, nothing more EVER, they throttle it to make it suck ass.
Fuck AT&T.
I am paying for whatever the "standard RR" is on the "triple play" package.
When I had ATT it was slower as DSL for that price.

this thread reminded me to set a deal alert on SD for a docsis 3.0 modem so i can tell TWC to go fuck themselves with the $3.50 "fuck you for being a customer" charge

No way that charge is for equipment maintenance, their modems are rock solid, I have had TWC a bunch of different times and have never had to have one replaced.
I think they are trying to recoup some money from dropping rates from that triple play deal. 2/8/2013 2:37:28 PM |

it's bullshit...and i'll be happy to pick up my own docsis 3.0 unit if it will indeed give me better speeds (in addition to being paid for by avoiding their bullshit)
i could go pick up a docsis 2.0 for $40 or so without looking too hard, i suppose 2/8/2013 2:55:26 PM |

"docsis" was triggered on SD and i read through the thread...the best deal, though, is a link to an ebay listing for a motorola 6141 (the newer and faster version of the 6121) that you can get for $65 when you make an offer (not buy it now)
at least, folks on there said it worked for them, and i just did it and it worked for me (immediately, so you know they have it automatically set to accept)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/330861841294
fwiw, the main (perhaps only) difference between the 41 and 21 is 8x4 (320Mbps/100Mbps) vs 4x4 (160Mbps/100Mbps) channel bonding...will it make any difference any time soon? depends on whether your ISP is using more than 4 channels, but probably not...but you're not going to find the 21 much cheaper (if at all), so might as well get the better unit
from what i've read (and someone correct me if i'm wrong), any service over 20Mbps will likely benefit from upgrading from DOCSIS 1.0/1.1 (ie. the SB5100) to 3.0
