Is it dangerous to keep a florescent bulb in, even though it doesn't work? I'm not sure of the switch is "on" or not and I don't want to keep it on if it is. The bulb works, it's brand new.

I'll probably just end up taking the bulb out assuming that'll fix my problem short term.

k thanks.

The bulb works? Does that mean the light itself is not working? Be careful if you go to take out the bulb, because if the switch is on it can shock you.

I'm confused as to the status of the bulb's functioning. Does it function or does it not function?

For the people confused in this thread some fluorescent light fixtures have ballasts. If these go bad then the bulb won't work, regardless of whether it's broken or not. Of course, this is usually a commercial application type device, not a residential one.

You find out if the switch is on or off by unscrewing it from the wall and licking it. A light tingle means it's on and no tingle means it's off.

^^i'm sure he's assuming the OP has a basic energy saving CFL bulb in a standard house lamp and not something that will require more explaination

haha, I love the direction this thread went!

I just removed the bulb. It's in a fixture from the ceiling, not a lamp to unplug. It's connected to a 3 way switch, so I have no idea if it's live or not.

It's not the bulb because I thought it was and replaced it.

Again, I forgot how much chit chat can be fun! I was fully anticipating this thread to be a "ntlb"!

This. The bulb has its own built-in high-frequency solid state ballast. No ballast to replace separately.
