My dad said his desktop got a virus, due to gay porn, no doubt, and shut down on him. When I try to boot it (normal, safe mode, last good config, etc) it just gets to the actual xp boot screen (the one that just says xp and has the progress bar) then loops back to the "windows did not start successfully, etc." screen and prompts me to start again. What can I do from here?

If you have a windows xp disk you can boot to it and attempt repairing it. Also you can try doing a repair in a mini xp boot disk that you can get from a Hiren's download. You might be fighting with it more than you would like. Back up your data, by either booting to a linux disk or hiren's and format and start from scratch.
