If you get them frequent enough ask your doctor for a prescription for either Valtrex, Zovirax, Acyclovir, etc. Just take a pill when you feel it tingling and you could possible prevent from happening.

Home remedies: Cold compresses, pop a vitamin E pill and rub the liquid on, I've heard of using a ground pepper mix but haven't been brave enough to try it.

Some people also swear by Abreva but I personally think it sucks. I used it once when it was prescription only and it didn't work well then and the over-the-counter version is worse.

Oh and word of advice for parents (future parents) out there: watch out for your babies. I got my first cold sore ON MY FACE when I was 6 months old. Somebody thought it was a good idea to go smooching on the baby and shared it with me.

Yeah, most people get them as kids. And a good majority never have symptoms as adults, but they still carry the virus and can pass it on. Though the risk of transmission is very low if you do not have any active sores.

Brake parts cleaner. It tastes likeshit but it will dry it out and be gone faster than using any meds

Put apple cider vinegar on it as often as you think about it. I read a bung of home remedies online, thinking most were bullshit. I for some reason decided to try that one & it did work for me. It burns like shit but makes it heal faster somehow. Acyclovir is a good way to go too. Abreva has never shown me much.

A lot of people swear by daily lysine supplements, or having a diet rich in high-lysine containing foods. It might not do much good in making your cold sore go away faster, but it can help prevent them from ever forming.

Drink sweet acidophilus milk. No joke, the bacteria within it helps prevent/get rid of cold sores. That's what my family did and it works great

Here's another word of advice for parents or future parents. Don't stress out trying to prevent this. Kids put their mouths on everything. All your going to do trying to prevent this sort of thing is drive yourself crazy and, in the smooching baby scenario, piss grandma off when you tell her she can't kiss your baby... then you blink and your baby starts drinking out of their cousin's sippy cup. The one that was frenching all over grandma earlier.
