Funny thing is I was off capital Sunday morning and saw a few box trucks laid on the side. Someone had already taken the cat out in the few hours that it was like that.

The storm hit us in alabama at 115am, and we heard of baseball size hail on tv hitting the walmart a few miles away.... so my roomate fit my truck and my car in the one door/dual garage for the first time ever, it came down to folding his side mirrors, me crawling out the sunroof, and he had to crawl out his window onto my hoof and slide down on a towel.

Update: Deemed TOTALED by Geico man...

Roof damage, c and a pillar damage, front fender damage, hood damage, rear quarter panel damage, trunk damage, windshield damage... all of it put together is estimated to cost $7,500.


Bottom line is that I have two options,
1) Take $8,600 and they walk away with a perfectly strong running WRX with body damage.
2) Take $5,800 and I can keep the car, but have to live with a salvaged title and deal with the damage.

Which of the two is the lesser evil??? What's sad is last year I just put brand new Tokico struts/springs on and this year I just did the timing belt, upgraded water/oil pumps.

Sorry for the shitty pic. Left rear corner is crushed bad and missing some glass. Caprice took something to the windshield and the antenna was bent almost down to the hood.

xvang: you could keep the car and part it out. As i'm sure you are aware, people in the wrx community are all about some part outs. How much would your engine and aftermarket parts fetch? Then throw in a complete interior and you could come out ahead by parting it out. Scrap the rest for scrap metal.

or, you could keep the engine and drive train for a custom car. I've been itching to put a subaru engine in to a classic vw bug. unfortunately i don't have the time or money for such a project currently.

also, if anyone has any buildings that are going to be demolished and sent to the dump, i would greatly appreciate coming to get some scrap building materials. two-by-whatever lumber, siding, sheathing. I'm going to use it to build raised garden beds or chicken coops.

^^^^ depending on mileage, i'd say an 04-05 WRX should be worth a grand or two more. but if he has like a $1000 deductible that would suck.

it's really your call xvang. if that was your daily driver and you dont have a backup car, you might want to take the money. if thats the case, dig up any receipts for mods and research how much cars with the same specs are selling for on the east coast. your insurance should be reimbursing you based on market value, not book value.

otherwise, straighten the frame out and turn it into a rally car.

Peeps will pay good money for that car since it's in perfect shape for engine/susp swap. This is the ideal wrx for anyone wanting it because it's been wrecked in a good way. No engine damage or susp damage. It's not a pot of gold, you shouldnt have any issues getting rid of it.


I'll give you $1000 for it the way it sits. Turn it into a rally car?

LOL, y'all are crazy... I should know better than to get advice from tdub.

Anyways, I'm leaning towards keeping the car. Going to get an estimate from a real shop (not just geico adjuster's opinion) on how much it will cost to fix.


Engine runs strong as day one (104K miles now) and my mods alone will fetch in at least $3,000 from my calculations. I've just put too much of my heart and time into her and can't let her go. I'm thinking I'll just keep it and drive it like nothing happened (maybe key in the words, "Tornado 2011" in the quarter panel). The only problem I have is fixing the windshield for inspection purposes. Hopefully my roof is not dented enough to prevent me installing a new windshield.

If the windshield is the only major damage. You're golden. Unless it's caved into the inside someone may bypass it at an inspection. Haha.

now's a good time to get a carbon fiber roof and a rally vent /scoop

if you don't mind having a salvage title

at least you can beat on it and bring it out to rallyX's now

get rid of the car.

i was in the same situation few years ago faced with same choices. i kept the car and thought damage would not bother me. bottom line is that you will be ok with how things are for few months and then damage will start to annoy you. salvage car is hard to sell and if you do end up selling it, most likely you will take a big $ hit.

it is '04 and it has 100k on it. it will probably run 250k easy, but do you really want a salvaged 7 year old car with body damage to drive around all the time?

it depends on how much the damage bothers you. i'd probably keep the car and gradually get the damage fixed since there's only cosmetic issues

if you think you might sell the car in the future, it may be a better move to take the money now instead of taking the loss later

who knows what will happen in the future...you'll spend a ton of cash fixing it and then we get another tornado, hurricane, or ice storm and you're right back where you started, only this time you'll get basically nothing.
