When my friend Chris and I first got online, we weren't aware of any standards for reading URLs aloud, so we'd be on the phone saying shit like, "Go to wuh-wuh-wuh, info seek, com."

Since pretty much everything we looked at back then started with www. and ended in .com, we started leaving them off and referring to sites by hostnames only: "Go to geo cities slash area 51 slash cavern slash seven two two one."

Pretty soon, we were good enough to indicate slashes by caesura, so it became more like "angel fire, rant, antros."

Eventually, lots more people started using the Web, and we got to hear URLs in TV commercials and shit, all this "dot com" stuff.

I always used Jordan Liggitt's alternate NCSU homepage he hosted. It was a skeleton of the shit that mattered - like a barebones collection of the basic NCSU tools you'll need and that was pretty much it. I wondered why NCSU didn't do something that simple.
