it's not uncommon to refer to a good friend of the family (read: one of the parents good friends) as aunt or uncle... I have several sets of aunts and uncles that are in no way blood or marriage relatives


also, i was gonna say it is a Yankee thing, but I know of several very southern families that do the same thing
