Out of curiosity, what do you need a 10 Gb card on a laptop for? Also, don't thunderbolt ports on the MacBook Pros qualify? 5/18/2011 11:59:01 AM |

There are no drives in existence to handle that much data for more than a few seconds. Also, I thought 10GbE connections were compatible with standard 10/100/1000 connections.
LOL, according to tests at Toms hardware you'd need a 12 drive SSD RAID0 array of some of the fastest SSD's made to handle just reading that much data. Not to mention a controller than can handle that many bits.

Did a little digging, there's no laptop solution currently available for this.
Now, if the port in question that you're trying to sniff traffic on is underutilized-- which is pretty typical, you could mirror a 10G port to a 1G port and sniff there. I don't know what device you have, but it's definitely possible on a 6500 or Nexus switch. If you're exceeding 1G at all, this obviously won't work.
Another option is that if you're after a specific stream, you can use VACL capture to essentially filter at the switch(still assuming a cisco switch here, not sure what you're working with).

Thanks for all the researching. We have various needs for this, but looks like we'll have to wait a bit longer. Thanks, all. 5/19/2011 10:22:50 AM |
