Just graduated and got a hand me down car, so I am trying to unload my former vehicle. Here's the scoop:

-93 Mazda Protege LX Automatic 103k miles Power locks Power Window CD Player.
-2 owners, first was an elderly couple for first ~75k miles, and I drove it after them.
-Car runs solid, has never broken down.
-Body condition is fair. Some damage to left front fender and some scrapes on body where grandma hit a yellow pole. All damage is superficial and does not impede on any doors opening.

Here are issues
-Belts squeal when car starts. This is relatively new and I suspect its from an oil leak that has dripped on the belts.
-Small oil leak. I added a quart every 2-3k miles. I think it was a gasket that needs replacing.
-Car vibrates when you are idling due to bad motor mount.

Looking to get a cool $1000. PM me if you are interested.

Car is in Wilmington ATM, so coordination would need to take place if you wanted to check it out in person.

Interesting. I have a Mazda Protege ( '99, also for sale but I don't want to steal your thread). The belts on it squealed a little bit as well. I have a friend that also had a Protege - the belt squealed for a solid minute every time he started the car.

Must be something that particular model is susceptible to.

Possibly. Although the issue started recently after I got new belts put on. BTW, tires are pretty new and have lots of tread left. Most of the belts were replaced recently (this past winter). New spark plug wires, too.

^^Yeah, in my case I ignored the squealing. It rarely did it anyway. In the case of my friend they squealed, eventually broke, and he had them replaced. The new ones squealed just as bad as the old ones.

No, it's something that cars, trucks, motorgraders, tractors, and other types of vehicles with belt-driven components are susceptible to. It's called having a loose belt (or an old, worn, dryrotted belt), and can be remedied in a matter of 30 minutes or less with a couple of wrenches and possibly a new belt, which costs less than 30 bucks. Expect a typical shop to make a huge production of this and charge you quadruple.

^They needed to go back and retighten it after break-in. Nobody does this; they're too fucking lazy. Nothing special about the setup at all.

thank you for that wonderful moment of automotive clarity ZX. It really gets me worked up sometimes how little people understand about how a car operates. Even on a very basic level.

These are actually pretty good little cars. The LX got the DOHC engine with 125 HP, which doesn't sound like a whole lot but the car doesn't even weight 2500 lbs. A family member bought one new and was quite fond of it.

Huh. My brother and I had a white one of these for a while in high school. It was a surprisingly good little car.

timbo, what kind of gas mileage do you get with this thing? With that small of an engine and that light of a vehicle I'd imagine close to 40mpg highway if the car's running properly.
