So last night my computer was working fine. I've seriously never had a problem with it.
I had used the battery until about 22% or so last night, so I figured I would leave it on and open to drain the battery so it can receive a full charge instead of a partial charge to extend my battery life.
So I walk in and try to turn it on this morning and it doesn't turn on. I realize "Oh yeah, I should plug it in and give it a minute to warm up before I try again." Still doesn't turn on.
I take the battery out and unplug everything from the wall and the laptop and go to work.
Six hours later, I come home and it's still not turning on.
After doing some research, I discover that there was apparently an issue with the NVideo cards used in this model and had it confirmed at one of the Mac Authorized Service Providers here in the area. They do a quick test and can't figure out if it's the logic board or not, so I had to leave it with them over night.
It might be a free repair if it's the NVideo thing... but it might also be something completely different.
Anyone have any thoughts? 5/30/2011 1:09:16 PM |

I had a very similar issue. Went to class, (late 2007 MBP), came back, laptop wouldn't work.
Oh, and fully draining a lithium battery doesn't extend your battery life. 5/30/2011 1:37:45 PM |

if the computer turns on (fans and harddrive and such) except for video, you've got the nvidia problem. my 15" of that era did it, and several of my coworker's 17" have as well. i'm using one now and fully expect the problem at some point. 5/31/2011 11:58:19 AM |

^ Most people were not aware of the problem when the machines were still in production.
And the issue is not an Apple related issue, it is an Nvidia related issue as it affects all computers with 8600m GTs/GSs and I think even 8400m GSs as well. Dell, ASUS, HP, ect are all susceptible with having these bad video cards. It's just Apple gets more press time because all of their MBPs at the time are affected by this because the 8600m GT was the only video card used. 6/1/2011 6:33:33 AM |

The problem is that I hear the (I think) hard drive start warming up (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrEE6Wy1Fmw) and then it never goes past that. Usually it was followed up with the "mac turn on sound" and then video would begin.
Unfortunately that's not the case and I haven't heard back from the repair shop yet.
My friend theorized that there was such a bad failure with the video card that it was stalling startup.
On a semi-unrelated sidenote, and this is completely random, but I had a ton of gnats come through an open window the other night and I found some of them dead around my laptop. After cleaning up the great bug-pocalypse, I started wondering if any had gotten actually IN to my laptop. There wasn't a ton, maybe 10... would that have a possibility of effecting things? 6/1/2011 7:50:48 AM |
