Help me, TWW. My laptop shit the bed and I need a new one.
All I really do on it is internetting, downloading and watching movies/music and basic stuff like spreadsheets and whatnot.

What do y'all think of this:

Given your fairly basic use, you could get by with a $299 computer. That said, this deal isn't bad.

Yeah, I was thinking that. This might be a bit much for me. I don't want to go the absolute cheapest, but I think maybe the 399 range would be better.

^^^I don't necessarily need it. I just don't want to have to wait months to find a good deal on one. I need to look more on slickdeals and see what I can find.

^I was thinking that too. The last one was an HP and wasn't all that great as far as I could tell. I'd rather pay a little more for something reliable.

If it makes a difference, I would use ShopDiscover to get 10% cash back, effectively bringing the price down $53.

I just found this one that seems to be a better deal:

http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/289194/Lenovo-G560-0679-99U-Laptop-Computer/?cm_mmc=Shoplocal-_-Circular-_-NA-_-NA

Any input?

1. Are you comfortable using Windows 7 Home?
2. Are you comfortable using Office >2003?
3. Are you comfortable with not having a webcam?
4. 2 USB slots aren't a lot. Do you use a lot of peripherals?

Just make sure you got wireless G and an 18-cell battery before you buy.

If I had to pick between the two laptops (without knowing the price), I'd take the ThinkPad based on the processor, however Leveno wins based on price.

Oh and I am kidding about the battery haha.

The only thing holding me back about the Lenovo is the fact that a lot of the reviews talk about how bad the touchpad is. I don't want to be forced to use a mouse with it.

I bought the toshiba satellite last year and its a great computer and was less than 300 from best buy. No complaints at all.

I don't know why, but I have this strong inclination to believe that Toshiba laptops are substandard.

I can't figure out how to filter it by price on that website, but I did a little browsing.

I really like this one:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Gateway+-+Laptop+/+AMD+Phenom%26%23153%3B+II+X2+Processor+/+15.6%22+Display+/+4GB+Memory+/+500GB+Hard+Drive+-+Velvet+Blue/2432285.p?skuId=2432285&id=1218328230672#tabbed-customerreviews

I think I may buy it unless you guys think that there's something really wrong with it. I like the 500gb hard drive and 4 gigs of RAM, since most computers at this price have either one or the other.

Only things I would be concerned with on ^ PC is the poor resolution, and heavy weight. That said, it will meet your needs and seems to be a good enough price.

[Edited on June 5, 2011 at 7:36 PM. Reason : V yeah probably not a big deal. It's 720p so ita not horrible.]

I don't care about the weight. I read a bunch of user reviews and no one mentioned the resolution being bad. I doubt it would be a problem for me anyway.

It's real easy. Theres an orange button that says 'Open Page Filter'

Click that, then click the 'Notebooks' checkbox. Then click 'Get Results'

Good luck finding something in that price range with better resolution.

And yeah, I'd lean towards Lenovo and Intel if I were you

Well that one I ordered is out of stock in the warehouse and every story in the district, and I'm probably not getting it.

So I guess back to the drawing board.

You could get one for cheaper than that, with less processing power. Also don't need 64-bit with only 4GB of RAM. I'd shop around some more.

The free xbox thing is for students only, and I don't really want one anyway. Plus that is way more than I want to spend. I'm topping out at $500.

That Thinkpad is a very solid machine. The keyboards on thinkpads are just solid $. And the new AMD's don't run nuclear hot like their predecessors.

If you're serious about doing nothing serious and you're ok with used/refurb hardware eCost has some good deals floating around. I'm buying a ASUS UL series as a coffee table and travel laptop. 12+ hours of battery and a light form factor was all I was looking for.
