I don't think you can even get one in person these days. I wen to the DMV about a yr ago and they gave me a piece of paper as a temp. license (literally a folded up piece of paper), it took close to a month to get the actual license.

Do need a license specifically? Is there anyway you can go get a state id?

It is. Not necessarily 'illegal', but your previous copied are not valid anymore. That's why they put the number of duplicates you've had on your current one. If a cop looks up your license that says you've had two duplicates when his records show you have three, you're gonna have some 'splainin to do.

i got pulled a while back and had both copies in my license.
he asked me why i had two and i told him in case i lost one.


he proceeded to tell me i needed to rip one up b/c that was illegal.

i've had 3 duplicates; my third one does not state that it is the third duplicate.

you are correct in saying that your driving record contains information on the issuance of duplicates, however. and the cop could theoretically check the issue date of the duplicate and compare that to your most recent duplicate record.
