Simmons new baby. Likely to devolve into an 80/20 pop culture/sports mix.

His yearly NBA trade value column is the only time I read him anymore. 20,000 word pieces comparing the Red Sox to reality show stars just don't do it for me.

[Edited on June 8, 2011 at 12:28 PM. Reason : This is just Page 3 again, though, right]

simmons' article about hockey is solid.

[Edited on June 10, 2011 at 11:36 AM. Reason : non-hockey fans should read it.]

this only reminds me how much i dont enjoy simmons' writing (and prolific abuse of footnotes). contrasted with someone like klosterman, it's almost embarrassing.

I enjoyed the 'A Man Alone: Dirk vs. the Heat' article

tl;dr = Dirk's stats are the same as the regular season, he's just shooting more

Uh... maybe not in his articles, but Klosterman is a big fan of footnotes as well.

To the point where I think there were some in Downtown Owl, which is a work of fiction.

I thought the whole reason Simmons got popular was from writing about real sports angles in a light and humorous way while throwing in pop culture references. I know those are the pieces that I like to read. NBA trade values, power rankings, picks columns, mail bags, etc.

Anytime he tries to write a more long form opinion article it comes off as hypocritical, hyperbolic and boring. Anything about legacy, lockouts, why something is failing or succeeding, X 80's game, etc.

Anytime he tries too hard at the pop culture columns, same thing (Lakers as Jersey shore characters, 50 wire quotes to describe the NFL, etc).

I read that today.

This site has been better than I've anticipated overall. Check it every day or two and there are always good articles.

Sometime soon (this week?) they are going to have an oral history of Friday Night Lights as told by the entire cast and crew.

If you like his articles, I suggest picking up his books. Their pretty enjoyable reads as long as you have an interest in pop culture.

someone should tell Simmons that just because he's friends with that Jacoby guy, it doesn't mean he should be writing for the site. I'm guessing the amount of people that care about the bad QB articles or the reality show fantasy league is below 100.

some of the best pieces are the football/basketball related pieces that diagram a play and show how a team executed it to beat another team, love those.

And if you really want to confuse and then upset a Tar Heel fan, call him up, say you have a basketball question, and then ask how he feels about this. Also ask if they think Boeheim or Coach K is the greatest in history. And then tell them the 1924 championship was bogus."
