They said that other than Madagascar where the live in the wild, this is the largest collection of lemurs in the world, and that basically any zoo that has a lemur either has one on loan from them or has a descendant of one of their lemurs.

The caged ones were apparently mostly ones that wouldn't do well in their open spaces, as in needed extra care, or could no longer make the jumps from tree to tree, but most are relatively free compared to these. The sad thing was that they felt they had to preserve them because slash & burn farming where you use up the land and move on has wiped out 90% of their natural habitat. And she said the coup brought in a leader who is even less lemur environment friendly. But they do have 2, and soon a 3rd preservation station located in Madagascar to try to do some preservation & education there.

I believe she also said lemurs in the wild live to be around 15, but there they live to be about 25 at the lemur center, and they had a few in their 30s.

For around $150 you can get much closer and see their wilder ones that apparently all come up when they shake a tambourine at feeding time (much like cats/dogs to a can opener). But this was the 10 buck tour. They did show videos of feeding time though which was adorable. Except for this one variety that had a hugely long, thin, weird looking finger .

^^I'm pretty sure that enrolling at a university & taking a course > a $10/1 hour tour in both terms of money & time commitment. Also, it's only $7 w/ a student ID, or $7 a person if you have a group of 10+. Although that would be a great opportunity if you're a student. You can also volunteer there and get closer and do more with the lemurs than any tour would let you do.

^They said they make terrible pets. Apparently the males have stink fights to win over females. They spray up their tails with all the scent gland stuff they can, and 2 males will take turns hitting each other and wafting their tails at each other. And whoever can stand the stink longest wins.

And another kind of the lemurs is apparently the only primate whose incisors or some teeth never stop growing, and they chew through everything... as in they have to patch up the concrete sometimes to keep them from getting all the way through. But they don't make good house pets either way.

I was out there when they were building the new lemur housing units. I got to walk through one of the buildings and see them up close. Neat stuff. Also I didn't have to pay anything.

I had scholarships and grants during that year *shrug*

And honestly, the class is easy.. and you got to see stuff they normally don't put on the tour iirc.

LEMURS! I went once at kindergarten age, I've always wanted to go back.
Lemurs are awesome ^__^

Made my ex lemur cookies for his birthday the year before last. I was proud of myself... drawing ringtailed lemurs onto cookies with toothpicks and a plastic bag of icing is difficult.
Also facepainted a lemur onto someone at relay for life.
