My parents were good friends with him in college and everytime he came over he would work out with me in the driveway. Will be missed.

Damn shitty day for NC State - finally make two headlines on ESPN.com and they are about our all ACC QB playing at freaking Wisconsin and then a basketball hero in Lorenzo Charles dying in a car crash.

RIP Lorenzo

Quote :
"BrassMonkeyNCSU
Houston's Phi Slamma Jamma aka Texas' Tallest Fraternity was led by two guys that would be named two of the Top 50 Greatest Players in NBA history in Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon. That Houston team made the dunk an art form, and used it as intimidation. They actually kept track of how many dunks they had in each game as one of their statistics. Guy Lewis, Houston's coach, once said, "We figure the team with the most dunks will win." He was right. There were only three dunks in the game, one to begin the game by State's Thurl Bailey, the second by Olajuwon about 15 minutes into the 1st half, and of course the dunk heard round the world by Lorenzo Charles.

Houston - 1
State - 2"

I'd never heard that dunk stat before. I was dubious until I saw the name on the commenter

I actually had to edit it b/c I forgot that Olajuwon had a dunk around 15 minutes into the game. I'm losing my touch for remembering random sports, particularly NC State sports, trivia.

^IIRC, the first score of the game for State was a dunk...and obviously the last play was a dunk as well.

^I must have misread it the first time...I see it now.

I've always thought this quote from Charles was pretty funny:

Quote :
""Most people say I was the guy who was in the right place at the right time," Charles says nearly a quarter century after the most famous put-back in NCAA Tournament history. "Actually, I was in the wrong place at the right time, because as an offensive rebounder, the particular position I was standing in when Dereck (Whittenburg) shot the ball was the wrong place to be.

"I was standing under the cylinder, which is exactly where you don't want to be if you are going to be a decent offensive rebounder.""

Some other good quotes in this article:
https://www.nmnathletics.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=9200&ATCLID=204889267

It's always been funny to me watching that replay and seeing Charles dunk it, and then turn around and look timid like he didn't know what to do. Everyone else is flipping out...Jimmy V running around, and Charles is just kinda standing there.

Quote :
""He used to try to dunk everything,'' Valvano once said of the player who eventually evolved into an All-ACC and All-America selection. "I mean everything. A little child walked by, and he tried to dunk him.""

Also, lets be glad the bus was empty, not for the passengers' sake, but for Lorenzo's.

If a few dozen civilians died with him, the media would've made him out to be a huge asshole.
