I just started traveling for work and on my first return flight I got to spend 6:00 PM - 5:30 AM in the airport after my flight got cancelled after them constantly delaying it for over four hours. I just hope this gives me some travel karma for at least a couple months.

i'm at somewhere around 6-700k miles in the air over the past 6 years for work and still love it - it helps that most of my travel nowadays is international but i like the domestic stuff still as well

some people are made to travel and can roll with the flow and some aren't

80% of my biz travel is back and forth to NYC, spring/summer isn't terrible, but from fall through winter there's about a 50% chance I'll get delayed anywhere from an hour to a day. Shit gets old VERY fast.

I've made a habit of on the trip back finding the most expensive place in the given airport and blowing my last day's per diem on a good meal. Makes things seem a little more worth it.

got delayed the other day for 18 hours before the cancelled the flight.

Im sick of it at this point, its inevitable in the summer that my flights will be delayed at least once.

in the span of 2 and half months i spent a week i china, india, and mexico. at each contry i visited 3 plants. it was nothing but travel and 12 hour days

^^ That is the worst and it is always when you are going home, not to where you will be working. I have never once been delayed when I fly up to Boston for the week but it is at least a 50/50 shot I will be delayed a few hours or more coming home. It doesn't even surprise me anymore.

I was a consultant the past 5 years and spent every week on the road. Sucked. Didn't mind international trips or projects in major cities so much - it was the projects in Panama City, FL, or in rural upstate NY that wore me down. Small planes and crappy hotels, terrible combination. Started a new job here in Atlanta this spring with less frequent travel, has been FANTASTIC so far. I think there's a optimal balance for business travel - it's good to get on the road once a month or so, but doing it every week for 4 days is a tough way to live. Unless you're a super-travel-douche who gets off on hotel points and airline bag tags... I'll admit, losing my starwood platinum status will hinder my ability to get baller upgrades, but that's a small price to pay!

there are guys on my current project that are turning down the us air 3ish hour flight for the 6+ hour flight to keep their status. The planes they're taking to do this don't even have business class.

staying at the hampton vs. a residence inn for 7 months is the lulz too

That is ridiculous. I would love to up my status with both American and Marriott but I am not going to go out of my way to do it, it is enough that I have to travel from TX to MA on a regular basis.

Guy I worked with would check out of his hotel every night and then go check into a different hotel of the same brand the next day to up his status. I'd rather stay put for the week and I definitely won't take a longer flight when a direct one is available.

i think the whole stays worth more than nights is stupid. You should get more points for the delta between nights and stays because they make more profit (assuming less house keeping, paperwork, etc)

I'm one of those guys who will take non-direct flights for the miles/segments and who hopped around to different hotels

The flights has worked out; I've been traveling 20 straight weeks now and have Platinum status on American. The plan is to get Exec Platinum this year, so I don't have to kill myself next year AND get the perks. Taking nondirects doesn't add too much more time (an extra 2 hours maybe for most of my round trips) and I kinda enjoy it; makes a game out of traveling. It helps that I don't mind being gone from home.

The hotels depends entirely on the promotions. If you're just trying to get status, I agree its not really worth it. As long as you'll do enough travel throughout the year to get the status, may as well just stay in the room. But some promotions make it worth it; during the summer Starwood properties had a promotion of 3 stays earns a free night at any of their resorts. I'd travel 3-4 nights a week, bouncing between the same two hotels, and earn a free night. I have 6 to use.


I don't quite understand the advantage for the hotels of nights vs stays either though. You'd think they'd save $ having you stay 3 consecutive nights, but I'm guessing its so non-popular hotels get more business *shrug*

I love the traveling in my job. I would spend every week away from home if I could. I wouldn't even mind being away on the weekends if I got to spend at least 1 at home. Except during Panther season... then I'd want to be home all of those weekends.

This year I only got to Silver Preferred on USAir, but I also did 4 or 5 of my 17 trips on the road rather than in the air. I'm actually looking for a job where I travel more.

My wife used to do business travel. Then her company decided that our family would make good gypsies and they moved us up to DC, and now over to Chicago.

Not that I'm complaining, since they're paying for the apartment.

Here is a pro tip for all you business travelers who hate it when the person in front of you leans their seat back. Turn your AC on full blast and just point it right at their head.

I can understand leaning the seat back on a really long flight, but if we are going two hours and I can hardly keep my laptop open with the little space as is then come on.

one time a guy behind me in first class complained to me that he "couldn't use his laptop" within the first 5 minutes of reaching cruising altitude on a flight from DC to LA. I leaned back further.

I prefer United, but since I am out of Charlotte I always fly USAir. It's not too bad. Lufthansa is great for my Germany trips.
