Hi, I have a people question. I understand you have clicked on this thread, believing the title to be "Sayings of a Black Male". But let's pretend that the title is actually,

"Mumblings of a Stranger"

Today, a black male, sitting on the sidewalk, mumbled something along the lines of "sup man" to me

I looked at him but did not respond.

Then, he said "hey, fuck you, too"

I thought it was very rude of him, but I did not speak back due to the perceived risk of physical violence.

Who's fault is it?

I would try to respond if I could understand his salutation before I walk a few meters away from him.

I think the emphasis was the mumbling.

I was downtown on Glenwood last Saturday night, when I was asked three times, by three different black males panhandling, "you're not afraid to shake a black man's hand are you?"


Does he ask this because people are really afraid of shaking someone's hand on the basis of race? Or is he just trying to awaken some sort of white-guilt and increase the chances of giving money away?

Either way, panhandlers went 0-3 that night. I only carry plastic.

Though I did shake all three hands!
