So, I'm on vacation and might hit one of these on the way home. Maybe both, I dunno yet. I've got two routes I can take where each is only a minor detour, and I think it would be cool to go to.
Anyone been to either? Both? Have a preference, or something I should see while i'm there? 7/4/2011 11:18:40 PM |

Monticello for sure. You have all the vineyards and wineries right there where you can see both the Monticello home but also try a few wines and maybe buy a bottle to take home. Appomattox doesn't have anything else nearby really and although it's a cool site its a bit underwhelming (i thought anyways)
if you can do both, do both. But if you have to choose, Monticello is where it's at. 7/5/2011 1:17:26 AM |

I went to Monticello earlier this year, it was pretty cool (second time being there). I didn't spend all day there, but the tour was interesting. There are some pictures on my travel blog here: http://mikeallover.travellerspoint.com/78/ 7/5/2011 1:19:24 AM |

Parents used to live on Lake Monticello just a few minutes from the Monticello. We went a few times and really enjoyed it. Definitely check it out. 7/5/2011 12:09:32 PM |

Monticello gets my vote. It's been years since I've been, and I'd like to go again. 7/5/2011 12:23:09 PM |

Monticello. ACH is cool if you're a history buff, but there isn't much there IIRC. You can be satisfied there in an hour or two . . . it isn't like a Gettysburg that takes days to tour or even a Chancellorsville which would take a full day to fully appreciate. 7/5/2011 1:24:33 PM |

Based on what I saw on the ij ternet, it does look like Appomattox is underwhelming as some one out it, not a lot to see... but at the same time I expected that, I just wanted to stand in the place where on of the most significant events ever took place.
With all the Monticello votes, i'm leaning toward that. 7/5/2011 5:25:28 PM |
