Oregon going under investigation and is anyone surprised?

When is everyone just going to admit that all the programs that become suddenly powerhouses are cheating and most of the powerhouses are cheating anyway. Pretty much everyone is cheating.

USC
Oregon
Ohio State
North Carolina

All went from not being very good to being insanely powerhouses (lol UNC) so it was pretty obvious to me.

I'm almost willing to give Oregon a pass. When they saw USC cheating so blatantly for so long and nothing was being done about it, they felt they had to bend the rules to keep up.

Now, USC has paid the piper, and the Ducks probably will too.

USC and Ohio State were not good at all before said coaches. They blew up almost overnight.

Got your pm. Don't play symantics. You know what I mean. Of course they were historic programs but they were not good at all the years leading up to that explosions. Just like if NCSTATE basketball all of sudden became a superpower it would be a bit fishy.

I can't suspend for stupidity. I wish I could.

This thread premise is actually true but SC was good long before Carroll reinvigorated the program..

This is what you call good?

01- 6-6
00- 5-7
99- 6-6
98- 8-5
97- 6-5
96- 6-6
95- 9-2
94- 8-3
93- 8-5
92- 6-5
91- 3-8

Sure they had history in the same way as NCState basketball but they hadn't been dominant in 15 years.

[Edited on July 7, 2011 at 3:47 PM. Reason : just depends on what you call good/great. they were on ncstate current football level back then]

He's not stupid, he's intentionally posting contentious shit like Tressel and Carroll built their schools, or TOB kicked RW's grandad in the dick. He's just trying to cause a ruckus. Again. Don't be a nancy, do the right thing. We shall victor.

normally he is a moron, but I agree in this case. Long term, of course USC and OSU were good before these last coaches, no one argues that. But, during a fair amount of the 90s they were both afterthoughts when it came to NATIONAL importance. I hate to say it, but they were like how Tennessee is now. Still a "good" team, but not anywhere near where they were. This is how USC and OSU were before Pete and Jimmy.

Tressel's first year was '01. OSU was three years removed from a Sugar Bowl victory (in their second straight appearance), had won three B10 titles in the previous decade, had won 10+ games five or more times and finished in the top 25 seven times (twice at #2, once at #6).

Tennesse last played in a BCS game in 2000, has finished in the top 10 once in ten years, and has won exactly zero SEC titles.

well yeah, in the Big10, exactly. Put them in the SEC and they would have been worse than Tennessee is now. Those teams you mentioned continuously got their asses kicked by the SEC in the bowl games. Georiga, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina twice I think. As I said, they were good, but nowhere near what they were under Tressell. A lot of 8-4, 7-5, 8-3, 6-6, 5 10+ wins, and won 3 bowl games

During the last 10 years, UT has 4 10+ win seasons, won 3 bowl games

Yeah, they probably would have fared worse in the SEC, but one game a year doesn't mean they would have been complete shit like Tennessee has been the past five or six years. And half the games you mentioned happened under Tressel.

Quote :
"A lot of 8-4, 7-5, 8-3, 6-6, few 10+ wins"

This is what you think UT has been doing lately?

no, one game, the second South Carolina game did (throw out Florida, I thought they played in the mid 90s), all the rest were Cooper.

And yes, that is about what Tennessee has done, see ^ above

11-2
8-5
10-3
10-3
5-7
9-4
10-4
5-7
7-6
6-7

Put the Ohio State teams you mentioned above, which already had really similar records to Tennessee in their decade of shit, in the SEC and their record would drop... you have them play Florida, Alabama, and Georgia every year, or even South Carolina who beat them twice in a row and you are looking at AT LEAST 3 more losses a year. So pretty damn even.

When did the SEC become the unquestioned number one biggest dick baddest most respected conference in the land? I think it was only within the past decade. Wasn't the Big 10 viewed as the toughest conference thru most of the 90's?

No?

SEC won in 92, 96, 98
Big 10 won in 97
Big 12 won in 94, 95, 97

rest were made up of FSU, Miami, and some random Pac 10 teams

National Titles hardly tell the whole story. I'm talking more about the national perception of conference strength over an extended period of time.

Texas having one great season didn't make anything think the Big 12 was number one.

Is the OP seriously trying to argue that USC and OSU should have been suspect from the start because of their lack of prior success?

Yeah, remember all those garbage teams with OJ Simpson and Marcus Allen and Eddie George and Woody Hayes and John Robinson and....seriously, these are the top 2 teams all time in the Big 10 and the USC. You probably think Miami has more tradition because they won all their games in your lifetime.

The 90s are murky because you had a Big 8 and SWC for more than half that time (but the SWC hadn't been challenging for titles), so you'd have 2 teams from the current Big XII, but they were champions of seperate conferences (usually Texas or Arkansas from the SWC and then Nebraska or Oklahoma or Colorado from the Big 8).

However, between 1990-2000, you had 9(!) different Big 10 teams win or share the conf. title., which isn't touched by the others as far as competitiveness.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Big_Ten_Conference_football_champions

However, that translated into 1 Nat. Title.

The SEC had 3 different champs in the same period (Bama, UF, UT), and 3 NCs.

USC was so removed from that. As NCSTATe fanbase, we have a huge lovefest with history and are the amway/quixtar equivalent to sports salesmen with the residual income scheme. We think that winning a title makes you more likely to win a title for the rest of your life and the more titles you win, the more you will certainly win in the future. Look at our basketball program. We feel like the two national titles we have somehow guarantee us a future of david thompsons and national titles. It doesn't work that way.

Some schools are always powerhouses for geographical reasons and cultural reasons. Not because they were good in the past. Schools that are usually good were good in the past for many of the same reasons that make them good now. They aren't good now BECAUSE they were good in the past.

USC isn't guaranteed to be good forever just because they were once great. UCLA basketball would have to cheat big time AND I MEAN CHEAT BIG TIME to maintain the status quo from the wooden era.

If all of a sudden UCLA went back to being as good as they were you woulnd't say "well thats because they are UCLA". It would be fishy as hell.

this is.......crazy

Quote :
"Nebraska self imposed a two-year probationary period as well as a fine because of NCAA violations pertaining to student-athletes who inadvertently received recommended course textbooks in addition to their required books. Recommended textbooks are not permissible under NCAA legislation.

Nebraska Athletic Director Tom Osborne said Tuesday that "nobody knowingly violated any rules" in regards to violations that the school recently self-reported to the NCAA.

Starting last November, NU found that a total of 238 student-athletes over a four-year span were allowed to use scholarship money to purchase "recommended" text books when only "required" are covered. Osborne said it happened due to confusion between the athletic department and the university bookstore.

"The error we made was we simply didn't monitor the situation as we should have," Osborne told The World-Herald.

NU also has imposed a fine of $28,000 on its athletic department.

"Essentially what we're doing is pleading guilty to failure to monitor," Osborne said.

Osborne used the word "embarrassing" several times during an interview in his office. It's possible that Nebraska won't hear back from the NCAA until at least October.

"Whether they feel we have done enough, we don't know," Osborne said."
