Alright, not trying to be racist here. But I live out on the edge of nowhere. Most of the few nearby households are African-Americans, and I often see them taking a little stroll as I drive home from work in the evenings. When I take a walk, I walk on the side of the road, no matter how little traffic the road seems to receive. However, whenever I see black people walking down the road, they ALWAYS are walking down the middle of the road. Why?

And furthermore, why does there always seem to be one in the group that carries a stick or a pole? I've heard it's for killing snakes, but I was curious if there was any truth to that.

I've heard this is because running on asphalt is supposedly better for your feet than running on sidewalk. Whether that's true or not shouldn't matter, since running on the road is more likely to get you hit by a car than running on the sidewalk.

Well if you ran 5 miles a day, 5 times a week, for 52 weeks a year, for multiple years... I'd think the differences in the surfaces become important.

That said, only a small percentage of runners do that - and for safety purposes, they should stay on the sidewalk.

I also think cyclists should have to either stay in a bike lane, a large shoulder, or only be allowed to travel on roads with 35mph or less speed limits.

There's nothing worse than going 55 down a back country road that's barely big enough for 2 cars, and having to squeeze in a guy wobbling down the road on a bike.

I don't have to dodge runners very often (also live in brier creek), but black people and wild snakes? All the time. They have some pretty epic battles in the middle turn lane down ACC.

It's not racist...you're just making an observation. Whether riding bikes or walking, black people show complete disregard for all forms of traffic. Down here I always see them riding bikes in the middle of the road AGAINST traffic. They also disregard traffic signals and cross extremely busy roads whenever they want. A common method is to cross half the road and stand in the one-foot-wide median while cars zip by at high speeds...then dash across again when they see a small gap in vehicles...narrowly being missed being hit then acting pissed off when a car beeps their horn.

i'm not saying that different surfaces don't make a difference, i just can't fathom what noticeable difference there is between asphalt and concrete...the only significant difference between the two is texture and i just don't understand why that would matter overmuch

i suppose asphalt might be "softer," but i don't see a ~150lbs person benefiting from that in any significant way

To me, it makes sense to go against traffic if you're walking or slowly riding your bike to me.

Unless you have eyes in the back of your head, you can see the cars coming at you and potentially get the fuck out of the way of some crack head driving crazy like. But if you go with traffic, you can't see shit behind you.

There can be a very noticeable difference on side streets with cheap ass asphalt. I've seen shit you could poke a hole in with a blunt stick in 80 degree weather. With that said, I've only ever run on asphalt when I lived in the sticks because of the getting hit by a car thing
