If his point is that we should leave the image in there so we can all see that racism is a problem, then I can kinda follow him. However, there's a whole lot of other stuff that he's saying:

1. He conflates removing the image from the The Brick with censoring the tunnel itself.
2. He implies that it's only the black community who wants the image removed.
3. He advises targets of hateful speech to thank the people who write derogatory messages on the tunnel: "Thank them for exercising their freedom."
4. He implies that the photo may not be controversial by placing that word in quotes.
5. In an enormously cliche turn, he cites his accepting, diverse childhood to justify his position: It's cool...I grew up with black people!
6. He puts the burden on the targets of this attempted intimidation/humiliation to educate the buffoons who would write this garbage in the tunnel.
7. He kinda morphs from freedom of speech into this notion of "freedom to hate" and how that freedom to hate is more important than equality. He is definitely moving into to some funky territory: if his statement were true, there could still be towns all across America with legally mandated separate and disparate institutions.
8. In terms of this education he keeps calling for, he doesn't really describe it. I think having the picture removed is a great first step in educating people that the N-word ain't cool. He apparently thinks the people who have a problem with the picture should STFU and find some other time to educate people.

And, as far as I know, he is alone in a lot of these views. Does anybody think it's okay to drop an N-bomb in published University materials and hand them out to all our incoming freshmen? It's a disaster.

I don't get this whole problem people have with his background. The school of science and math, as per the article, represents a multiracial environment where there are not problems between these groups. Not mentioned in the article is that it's affluent, of course.

I dont believe that for a minute, we all have trials we have to face, based on race, sex, religion, etc. I guarantee I get discriminated against for my religion more that any minority gets discriminated for their race, especially blacks (never understood why they are still called african americans, i bet they cant name one ancestor that was from africa).
