"OCRACOKE, N.C. — A 6-year-old girl is recovering after a shark attack on the North Carolina coast.

Cyndy Holda of the National Park Service said the child was bitten on the lower portion of her right leg and a foot around 5 p.m. Tuesday on Ocracoke Island. The girl had been playing near the beach with a boogie board in about 18 inches of water when she was bitten. Family members said the girl's mother was 10 feet away and saw the attack.

The child, whose name was not released, was flown to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

The girl's family released a statement Tuesday afternoon saying the child was in good condition.

"She is in good spirits, declaring this morning that, 'I hate sharks. I like dolphins way better,'" the family said.

Ranger Kenny Ballance, of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, said late afternoon and early morning are the most common times of day to see sharks so close to shore.

A park service spokesman says the last shark bite on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore was off Avon in 2001 when a man died from his injuries."

once I've acquired a shark's dorsal fin, my collection of exceptional animal features will be complete (the animals needn't be exceptional, only the parts)

This shit is so fucking stupid! I was flounder gigging on South Point saturday night and saw several 3' sharks swimming around. It's Ocracoke Island for gods sake, the farthest out in the fucking ocean you can be, of course there are sharks there. It doesn't take much of a shark bite to really hurt a little 6year old girls leg. Sorry it happened to her, but it's the fucking ocean.....no one would ever go run with a pride of lions and then act all shocked when someone got bit

-If there's any thing good to come out of this, maybe it will scare all the ding batters away from ocracoke

Also, to all the retards claiming it's a bull shark.... have you ever seen one? do you know how big a fucking bull shark is? way too damn big to be in 18" of fucking water. The most common in that shallow of water is probably a sandbar, lemon shark or black tip shark. Hell often times with bites this small it's actually a barracuda or a large bluefish, but everyone just assumes it is a shark.

So are you claiming bull sharks start out bigger than 18 inches?

[Edited on July 20, 2011 at 10:53 PM. Reason : FTR, I don't know much about bull sharks ]

^^Bull sharks are like 30" when they're born which is still small enough to swim in 18" of water, however pups aren't usually born until early fall meaning most bulls hanging around now are large sharks, mature or nearly mature. Also, this are of south point is on the open ocean side, pups will normally stay in the sound side for protection.

Not saying that Im a shark expert or anything it just pisses me off when people in general who don't know shit about the ocean or living on the coast jump on the bull shark band wagon and then start calling for nets to be set around the beaches and sharks to be hunted down.
