I live in a building that was built in the 1890's and in an area where there is a huge demand for apartments like mine. Landlords have no incentive to upgrade properties due to the fact that they can rent them so easily. I have some experience doing home maintenance and I'm interested in renovating our bathroom. It probably hasn't been updated since the 60's and is starting to fall apart. I would be willing to eat the cost of the new vanity/toilet/tile etc and do the labor myself. I am just worried I will get in a whole mess of trouble if I screw something up. Is it worth it? I'm afraid to ask the property manager because I don't want to be told no. pretty hard to fuck up a toilet and vanity. I say do it though I'd probly demand it be done first and if he says no, do it myself

if it really is a historical property and you don't own it... of course you have to get permission.

I looked at a bunch of other places this past month but found nothing worth moving to. As I said the market highly favors property owners, not renters. Nearly all rentals require you to pay a full (sometimes half) month fee up front. Having seen what else was available in my price range I am convinced I am getting a pretty good deal, which only strengthens the fact that the landlord is under no pressure to renovate the property.
