Mine is 4 days a week right now. Possibly 3 days a week beginning in about a month. But this week, it's 700 miles for Monday through Friday.

in the past year I have put ~33k on my work truck and ~18k on my personal truck. so this comes to about 140 miles per day average over the past year......
edit: revised numbers: those mileages are since the beginning of July '09, so it is more like 130 miles per day over 13 months.

My work commute is 15 miles each way, so on average around 35-40 miles a day. I really wish I could ride my bike to work but I'd have to live closer for that and I have no desire to live anywhere near my office. 7/26/2011 4:42:52 PM |

I always have fun with mileage metrics.
When PDAs were cool, I had a palm pilot program I used where I manually entered fuel price, odometer reading, and gallon amount to record data over a period of approximately one year. It was exciting.
Then PDAs went the way of Sony Minidiscs and Laser Disc readers and Google, so now I am just waiting for the gas mileage app for facebook.
Anyway, point is that one of the first steps of effective financial budgeting is calculating mileage since the cost of gas is now such a huge factor in the cost of living for an American. Historical data will help you predict where you should live versus how effective that location is with respect to work.
In summary I beat the spread over the last three years based on that PDA data, and it was awesome.
I would keep track and pretend that I had thermal imaging gear to verify I was seldom using my car. I would pretend if I could see my engine block with thermal imaging gear (if you've ever seen this technique you know what I mean) to calculate average usage of run time and when the car was powered down. If I could see my engine block with my imaginary thermal imaging gear on most days I was doing something wrong.

^x6You can do most of that now with a iOS app. I use the KB Car Care app which was like $1.99.
Currently I drive 331 miles a week for work or avg. of 66 miles a day. I live in Halifax County but work in Orange County, and stay in Wake County during the week. So my Monday AM drive and Friday PM drive SUCK.
Once the house is sold or my wife gets a job and we move to CH, I will get an apartment on the bus route and then my commute will be 0 miles. Can't wait for that just because I will save a shitload of money on gas and negate the need to replace my 16 year old truck that is pushing 300k miles.

I never fancied it up with a PDA, but I've been writing down my mileage, the date of the fill up, # of gallons purchased, and fuel cost on notepads for the last 12 years. It is interesting data to track, that's for sure.
Also makes it extremely easy to remember when you last got an oil change, rotated the tires, aligned the suspension, etc (since you can write that in as well).7/26/2011 5:04:00 PM |

^^^Yea I grew up with my dad doing that shit in Works. I didn't want to fucking deal with bringing it home and putting it in, so the KB Car Care app alleviated me of all that shit. Now I just put it in while I drive, since 99% of the time I have my iPod on me to listen to my music/audiobooks. When you put in the mileage on the fuel updates it automatically calculates your mileage since you changed the oil, rotated the tires, etc. and warns you when its getting close and surpasses your preset mileage alerts.

He turned his OCD into a gimmick and actually profited from his ability to quantify and record absolutely everything in his daily life for the best cost-benefit-analysis...even external analysis on his iPod playlists and net number of times each one of his iPod mp3s was played over the period of a year
