hahaha

its not that big of a deal (hence the hastily typed op)

but whattahappened was
cody and i were talking about UNC and the merits of their school.
of course it was a little biased but we were trying to be as objective as possible (which of course was probably not )...and we starting talking about whether, academically, it really was a superior school.
got me to thinking too...
well i heard (i think from here) that the gpas of undergraduates at UNC are usually a bit higher than that of say NCSU or ECU or even WFU or Duke. But i'm not sure.

couple that (if it is true) with the fact that they only take generally really smart people.
i did read somewhere that 97% of their incoming freshman have a 3.75 or higher. (i can find that source if you want )

now combining these two it makes me think that its a strong possibility that the level of basic courses being taught are NO harder than that of competing schools.
i mean these students could go to almost any school and get the same caliber education (now there are some exceptions im sure, im being kinda general here...thinking about bio 101 shit)

this would mean that they don't provide a better education (of course like i said there are a few exceptions, isn't UNC known for journalism?)

now there is the possibility that the classes are harder and they still are making better grades. (this is very much so a possibility but it would be kinda hard to prove, and even then could the grading scale be easier? padding grades? it would be hard to prove)

and also theres the idea that other schools just party more

of course this is COMPLETELY contingent on the gpa of students of UNC as well as other schools.

thats the short.

let it be known that
1. i do NOT accept any of this as fact, just musings to myself. i'm sure there are several flaws in that thinking...feel free to point them out. a
nd i am fully aware that you guys have the ability to blow this out of the water and make me feel really really dumb. do it. i have no problem admitting i am wrong. then i can muse on something else.

B. i understand that i am in NO way the first person to think this.
but its kinda fun to come up with on your own

Seriously though, are you talking about undergraduates who graduate? I think 2.0 is like the rock bottom minimum GPA you can get without getting kicked out eventually. And then each college has their own requirements that may be higher than that. So it seems like the stats would be skewed by the fact that people who don't meet a minimum get the boot.

I'd guess Chapel Hill's average is much, much higher than State's average. UNC-CH has way more grade inflation, and State has more unprepared kids getting their butts kicked in math/science classes that I can't even name. Chapel Hill is moving to those contextualized transcripts that basically call out easy classes.

On the GPA thing, there's no actual measurement that can accurately be taken. Too many variables. Too easy to prejudice.

You could measure successful graduation from schools in a GPA range and the likelihood of employment without graduate education, but even that is going to have to account for things that make no sense. (Emotional variables, background, previous education, extracurricular activities, community situation)

Carolina is a good school, most of the people who attend are good people. State is a good school, some of the people who attend are fuckheads. The only people who argue over academic integrity are insecure about their own education. Glass houses and shit.

^ i am not saying that UNC is a bad school..... at all. (i wasn't trying to argue that at all...did it come off that way?!?! )

i'm wondering if it's a superior school like most people believe it is.

i mean i guess it is in the fact that only "the brightest" go there.

this whole convo stemmed from the classic "youre just mad cause you didn't get in to UNC" statement.

It's pretty much impossible to judge how good an education one gets at a school relative to others.

Even widely accepted rankings like Princeton Review are based on mostly stuff like graduation rate (the higher the better) and how much alumni donate.

Certainly. The data you seek is exclusively maintained by the IRS, where net income over your lifetime is correlated at a rate of $5 per 0.01 grade point.

My feeling is that an undergrad degree from State is worth more than one from UNC, while a grad degree from UNC is generally worth more than one from State.
