i went to catholic school growing up and we had a "penmanship class" where we would dedicate time to learning the proper way to write cursive.

now.....i can't even try if i wanted to.

I use print for capital letters, and cursive for the rest.

[Edited on August 12, 2011 at 12:24 PM. Reason : this is under the broad assumption that most people sign in cursive ]

I'm sad by the number of high school grads that can't even sign their name in cursive. What are they teaching kids these days!

^ I never understood that section of the test. I think it was just to piss you off before your test taking even began.

the problem with cursive is, is that while there is a standard format, almost no one who has learned it actually uses it. cursive is a very person-specific written language, as most people customize it to their liking; often by hybrid methods. this leads to difficulty in understanding other's writings. on the other hand, when people use normal type, aside from bad handwriting, they generally follow the standard forms, with much less customization, as compared to cursive/hybrid. that is why those in technical fields never use cursive. it is always normal type and often in small caps or all caps. it is neat, legible, and greatly reduces the chances of misreading.

signature /= scripting

my signature is mainly a bunch of capital print letters, except the J looks like a 4
along with squiggly lines

Yes, and other people can easily do this "for" you, and you'll never be able to prove it wasn't you. At least with a real signature the judge can compare your actual signature to whatever BS the forger wrote.

(Yes, I am speaking from experience)

I now avoid digital "signatures" on things that involve money or are otherwise important. Some lessons just must be learned the hard way.
