...an experiment that turned out really fucking well for the people it was intended to enrich. When the United States went off the gold standard and the dollar remained the reserve currency, we defaulted. We essentially said, "You can't redeem your gold - but you can buy more dollars."

When the dollar ceased to be backed by anything except "the full faith and credit of the United States government," perpetual deficits became a virtual certainty. As long as politicians have the power to devalue the currency to buy political favor, they will, and that's precisely what has happened. We were told we could have low taxes, low interest rates, two wars, and an economic boom, and the people fucking bought it hook line and sinker.

It's going to be fun/miserable to watch this all unravel.
