Will this pave the way for affirmative action to make sure a university has enough gays? More importantly, who will make an acronym for this and what will it be???

http://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/Elmhurst-College-to-Ask-About-Sexual-Orientation--128378348.html?

Quote :
"Elmhurst College to Ask About Sexual Orientation

Elmhurst College put a question on its admissions application that won’t appear on any other school's application.

"Would you consider yourself to be a member of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered) community?”

That optional question makes Elmhurst the first school in the country to ask applicants about their sexual orientation or gender identity, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Gary Rold, the dean of students at Elmhurst, stressed the question falls in line with the campus’ mission statement to increase diversity.

Prospective freshmen and transfer students applying for the 2012 fall semester will become the first group of applicants to check “yes,” “no” or “prefer not to answer.” Their answers will not play a role in the admissions process.

A “yes” answer could put students in line to qualify for a scholarship worth one-third of tuition at the private, liberal arts school affiliated with the United Church of Christ, said Rold.

The college also plans to direct students to groups or resources to help them feel more comfortable on campus.

"We try really hard to take good care of students, have them graduate and be successful citizens in the world,” he said."

i feel what hes trying to do but its inappropriate to try to say this will have no bearings on admissions whatsoever

just provide information along with, but separate from, college applications to fill out if they wish to apply for aid and/or be cognizant or involved in campus functions

I think the real purpose of this fag house is to pass out anal lube. I'm mad that N.C. State was the 17th most unappealing to homos, I believe we should strive to be first.

So if you really want to get in, it's best to do the following?

Age: 26 or older
Race: Black
Orientation: LGBT
Gender: Female (or Other, when that becomes available)

I mean, it's not like they can question it when you show up looking like a white male.

Somebody made a similar comment like that back in 2010. Rather than retype my response, I'll copy & paste.

Quote :
"That was some time ago.

I believe it was the Campus Climate Index/Campus Pride that gave us that ranking before, and now they actually give us 4 out 5 of stars now (only 19 schools did better) so we've done a complete 180 there. They even put us on their Honor Roll.

The only other big ranker in that regard is The Princeton Review and we aren't in their top 20 worst either."

I mean, we've got vice chancellors having supportive events, we've got the glbt center in talley, we've got the gay student group, even a gay fraternity I think, we had a larger turnout marching at pride than unc & duke combined, and you can't apply for a job at state without seeing the we don't discriminate based on sexual orientation thing top and center. We do all the stuff that schools that are welcoming are "supposed" to do, and so we're really good on the rankings last I checked.

No reason it should be either, at least I haven't heard a compelling case for it. Its not like there are any colleges that don't have gay students.

"Shirley Ort, UNC-Chapel Hill associate provost and director of the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid, said there is a similar scholarship available for UNC-CH students.

The Pine Tree scholarship fund was established in 1995. The privately endowed scholarship gives funding annually to two members of the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Straight Alliance.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students have made headway at UNC-Wilmington with the introduction of a new scholarship targeting financially disadvantaged members of their community and supporters.

The Boseman-TenHuisen scholarship, which is awarded by the university but funded entirely by private donors, will be given each year to a member of the UNC-W Bisexuals, Gays, Lesbians and Allies for Diversity.

Why is this important for a college application? I'm not buying the diversity bit... and I don't see how it's relevant in the slightest

they want to include as many queers as possible in the process of getting that college chedda

also btw the question isn't so much about sexual orientation as violation of the heteronorm; even if you're straight but your gender identity doesn't match with your physical sex, you're counted
and if a few activist organizations have their way, even crossdressers, people who look androgynous, and the intersex would be included

Pretty sure they'd consider that fraud. Though I guess you could play the "I'm a 26-year old black gay female trapped in a white man's body" card.

You probably couldn't get away with lying about your age.

Race, Gender, and Sexual Orientation are socially constructed. It's whatever you identify with, not what others identify you as.

(long live the oxford comma and ending sentences with prepositions)

i would totaly check yes, because there is no way for them to determine the truth since sexual orientation is a choice. it's not like they would show up to your house and be all "wait a minute, you don't look Hispanic to me, and your name is actually Dalip, you are Indian you fucking liar!"

Are LGBT students really underrepresented in universities? Why do they need this?
