I'd go with that 190% knocked the fuck out.

But I bet regional is cheaper.

with general, you have to be intubated.

and that shit will hurt, since you'll have a piece of rigid plastic jammed down your throat until you come out of the anesthesia.

also it's more risky.

but, if you're super anxious about the whole surgery thing, and will have a panic attack or whatever, just get general.

Acl repair can be a pretty violent surgery (unless its only a partial tear or something), I thought the anesthesiologists recommended general.

Never had acl surgery though, but for an ankle fracture requiring screws and a plate... the ortho wanted to do a block but Dr feel good said no way in hell. I got general plus the block.

I do recommend requesting they do a block to help with recovery even if you get general. It will help with pain management the first day.

I have had general anesthesia 3 times the past 7 years.... each time it was progressively harder on me recovery wise. It depends how well you handle hard narcotics. First time was a breeze, I was just high as hell. Second, I threw up, but that may have been the painkillers at home. Third, I threw up being wheeled out of the OR.other than the barfing, it was fine. Just was groggier each successive time

[Edited on August 31, 2011 at 10:04 PM. Reason : the intubation was never real bad, just awful cotton mouth.]

Dweedle, if they do a regional... you're still heavily sedated with propofol to the point where you black out and basically sleep through the whole thing. You won't get to watch.

I have a spinal fusion, so I have an acute fear of my neck being broken during intubation. Even though I have had general anesthesia successfully, I would choose regional every time.

I've been under general three times and don't remember this. I think they put it in after gassing you.

they gave me gas for my wisdom teeth. They put the mask on me and said "Count back from ten." The last thing I remember is saying, "TEN!!"

Yeah but not every acl repair is exactly the same. I imagine it has a lot to do with what's going on down there.

Go general. You're going to be out of commission all day anyway. Your body will want to rest and repair itself.

fuck all that noise, take some ibuprofen and a few 40s. the 2 of the 3 times i had surgery it was in my throat and nose and they wouldn't let me be awake. oral surgery i opted out of anesthesia because that shit was an extra $400 and it was gonna hurt like a motherfucker for 2 weeks anyway

For my shoulder I had both which meant less amount of general than would have been required normally. Woke up after surgery, was pretty much good to go for the rest of the day (minus the nerve block)

Well of course they do, they're not going to force you to deepthroat an air tube while you're awake and gagging. I think 'that shit' he was referring to hurting was your throat/neck/jaw afterwards.

they are offering you a choice? i thought ACLs were done under general...if anything they should do both. femoral nerve block + GETA = win

I had ACL and a screws/plate ankle surgery and had general for both. Never noticed my throat hurting afterwards and both were pretty much painless.

ACL had the harder recovery by far though, rehab for that blows.

I reckon it should be evident that the minimal amount of anesthesia is the best.

If you've never been knocked out before, it might be something you want to experience for the fun of it...but after that, why?

(My dentist and I haven't bothered with local anesthetic for years, but I don't think my cavities have ever been that big..we're slowly building up to the deep stuff! AHA )

^^^ Nah just one bone but the break was pretty bad so it needed the screws. Theres a pic of the xray in my gallery

http://thewolfweb.com/photo_photo.aspx?user=29702&photo=463808

They left the plate and screws in also, only took out the long one. I can still feel them through the skin, kind of a wierd feeling

general + nerve block FTW

I've never had an adverse reactions to the anesthesia or tube down your throat.

^^^^yeah I still have mine too... I can feel them as well. Had an xray like 9 months after and bone was growing over the plate. It was wild.

But with the block and general I couldn't feel it either. But my skin was absolutely on fire. The inside was all numb though.
