Why does the spider robot literally have a mouth?

I watched that movie a long time ago and I specifically remember those things not having mouths.

^the movie is more monotonous

the manga was cheekier (thus, the game is truer to the original). the later series and movies got a bit cheekier as well

btw I can see now that the production company is "Production I.G" but their anime titles have pretty varied animation styles. what other animes are drawn similarly/exactly like the two in the OP?
