May not apply to everyone, but if you're a hip hop fan then these are for you:

Black Star - Mos Def and Talib Kweli Are Black Star
Eric B. and Rakim - Paid In Full
Nas - Illmatic
A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory

and I'll echo Stankonia and Enter the Wu, which have already been mentioned.

You know why Paul's Boutique isn't overrated? Because they made a killer track out of a sample of "Loose Booty" and then named it with a Bible verse. COME ON.

I was wondering where all the radiohead albums were on that list because I was like "how the fuck can you have a comprehensive hipster album list with only the bends?"

and then i saw the neutral milk hotel, ok computer, and the bends up top with in the big dog column

and then i clasped my hands together and whispered "it be done"

Is King Crimson at the top some kind of inside joke?

And why is Siamese Dream so far down?

That Fleet Foxes album had like three good songs and dropped off quick

Putting Smile on the top row is a good way to identify your self as a douchebag

Cool to see The Glow Pt. 2. Seems like not enough people know about that album.

What the hell is Carissa's Wierd?

Remain in Light is not the most essential Talking Heads album and 69 Love Songs is not the most essential Magnetic Fields album

[Edited on September 5, 2011 at 5:15 PM. Reason : Surfer Rosa is not the most essential Pixies album]

[Edited on September 5, 2011 at 5:16 PM. Reason : Same for Beggars Banquet, Loaded and Abbey Road]

I didn't think they were ranked in order, outside of the top 6 "core." I like that King Crimson album but I, too, didn't think it was essential of an album

where's that picture from anyways?

Doolitle is also up there. I would say that Sister and EVOL are just as essential as Daydream.

In the court of the crimson king isn't the most influential prog rock album or anything unless you want to count wish you were here for inspiring every shitty jam rock band who didn't get it

I'm Krallum and I approved this message.

a few more rap albums:
Outkast - "ATLiens"
Ghostface - "Ironman"
Pete Rock and CL Smooth - "Mecca and the Soul Brother"
Blu - "Below the Heavens"
I'd also toss in the Soul In The Hole soundtrack. It was a monster.

and some soul albums:
Isaac Hayes - "Hot Buttered Soul"
James Brown - "Live at the Apollo"
Curtis Mayfield - "Superfly"
Ray Charles - "Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music"

And I co-sign on "Purple Rain". Prince is a genius!

Shit I forgot about Dookie, one of my favorite albums.

Anyway this thread is stupid because there are no essential albums.

No matter how good you think an album is or even how much universal acclaim it has, someone is gonna think it sucks. It's obviously not an essential album for them.

That "hipster list" holds a special place in my heart...it's now I discovered Helios

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Yanqui U.X.O.
TV On the Radio - Dear Science

The Faint - Danse Macabre
Belle and Sebastian - Dear Catastrophe Waitress
Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
HEALTH - //DISCO
The Wrens - Meadowlands
